Tom Emmer has proposed getting rid of the tip credit in Minnesota.
The reason? The owner of the Eagle St. Bar & Grill said that he had 3 waiters who make $100,000 per year after tips.
Let's go to the math:
$100,000 per year (40 hours per week) is about $48.08 per hour. Minimum wage for a restaurant the size of Eagle St. is $7.25 which means that mystery waiter has to make $41.00 in tips. Of course a waiter that good wouldn't work at the minimum, he or she would be making at least double the minimum. If said waiter is hustling to keep 4-5 tables happy & served, and turning them over (so the owner can make more money), why shouldn't that waiter make a boatload of tips?
Who does getting rid of the tip credit hurt? Certainly not the wait staff at Eagle St, Manny's, Ruth's Crist, or any of the high-buck high-service places. It would hurt the waiter at Perkins or IHOP. The waiter at the small diner.
After August 10th, the DFL has to get behind whoever wins the primary 100%, or we can end up with the biggest blowhard in state history as our governor.
