It seems that one of the main reasonse given by those opposing the Muslim Community Center in Manhattan is that the "Muslims" (note they are not Americans, like us), should have some sympathy for our feelings over 9/11. The basic argument is that, yes, they do have a Constituional right to build it, but they should be more sympathetic and go elsewhere. It seems that their hurt feelings should trump the Constitution.
How about if we extend that reasoning to other rights, as well.
My family was the victim of gun violence. Back in the early 90's, on the day before Thanksgiving, my parents were shot during a robbery at their place of business. They both nearly died. They both spent months in rehab after a lengthy stay in the ICU. It ruined their lives and those of their children. They lost their business, they almost lost their home, and now their children must spend countless hours and countless dollars trying to keep them from having their home foreclosed. They both still live with the aftereffects every day of their lives. Pain, both physical and emotional, and the inability to live every day without being reminded of the senseless act that stole if not their lives, then their freedom. Yes, their freedom.
Now, I'm not the only person in this country to be the victim, either directly or indirectly, of gun violence. And I'm sure that though you, my fellow citizens have the right to own guns, maybe you should have some sympathy for me, my family and countless others in this country. Maybe it would be better if you gave up your guns.
What do you think? I'll wait.
