We all know the wackiness of the Birthers. It's been an ongoing train wreck for more than two years now.
Having failed to convince anybody except insane people that Barack Obama is not a natural born citizen, the movement to paint our first African-American president as "the Other" has taken an entirely new tack.
They want to see his baptism certificate.
In an article on the right wing Accuracy In Media web site, Cliff Kinkaid makes the argument that Barack Obama is really a Muslim because there is no proof Obama was ever baptized.
Make no mistake about it, the questioning of the baptism is questioning whether or not Barack Obama was dunked under water in the common ceremony of Protestant denominations.
This brought me back to questions raised in my childhood during the late 60's and early 70's. I grew up in a small town in Southeastern Indiana. One of the questions about your religious background I heard on the school playground was, "were you sprinkled or dunked?" My parents had me baptized as a Catholic during my Christening. That meant I was "sprinkled" and that somehow made me less Christian than the majority of the kids who were "dunked". The fact that I attended Sunday School and church at a Methodist church made no difference, I wasn't dunked so I wasn't as good as everybody else.
Needless to say, I am not a Christian today.
The new (racist) movement to paint Barack Obama as "the Other" is following this same ignorant baloney, Because there is no baptism certificate in evidence, Barack Obama remains a Muslim until he can prove otherwise. Forget the fact that it requires a very twisted logic to get there. Forget the fact that many denominations do not make "baptism certificates". Forget the fact that baptism means different things to different denominations.
So the Birther movement failed and from the ashes of that failure we see the rise of the Dunkers.
Dear God, save me from your idiot followers.
