Senator Jeff Merkely is stepping up to help, sending out this email today to raise money for "Proven Progressives":
I know you share my commitment to ending the special interest bazaar in Washington, so today I'm launching a contest so that together we can bring Proven Progressives to the Senate.
I've chosen six progressive candidates in tough races who aren't afraid to stand up to the big Wall Street banks and the corporate machine. Not only will your contributions help the candidates you choose, but here's my commitment: The candidate that receives the most donations ($5 minimum), will receive the maximum allowed donation from my Opportunity and Renewal PAC.
You can donate as many times as you'd like to as many candidates as you'd like, but only one donation per candidate will count toward the contest. Who do you want to win? Make a donation to your favorite Proven Progressive today and make your voice heard!
Proven Progressives
Patty Murray has been a consistent champion for Washington State and progressive causes, from opposing the War in Iraq to ensuring that veterans have access to quality medical care. Her opponent, Republican Dino Rossi, supports borrowing $800 billion from China to repeat the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and believes we should repeal the Wall Street reform bill.
Paul Hodes is a true blue progressive running for the Senate in New Hampshire. Hodes is a strong supporter of a woman's right to choose and marriage equality. His opponent, Kelly Ayotte, was endorsed by Sarah Palin, is against a woman's right to choose, and promised to vote against any attempt to repeal the anti-equality Defense of Marriage Act.
Russ Feingold is facing a tough race in Wisconsin against multi-millionaire businessman Ron Johnson, a global warming science-denier. Russ Feingold has always stood by his values no matter what the polls say. A staunch opponent of the Iraq War and of free trade agreements like NAFTA, Feingold has consistently been a strong, independent voice for the American people.
Chris Coons is running for the Senate against the newest tea party celebrity, Christine O'Donnell. Coons supports closing the revolving door between members of Congress and lobbyists, and is determined to end our dangerous addiction to foreign oil. His opponent Christine O'Donnell is so extreme that her former campaign manager called her "a complete fraud."
Jack Conway, Kentucky's Attorney General, is running a strong race for the Senate against tea party darling Rand Paul. Conway strongly supports the Employee Free Choice Act, breaking up the big banks and repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell. Conway's opponent is so radical that he questions the Constitutionality of both the Civil Rights Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Barbara Boxer of California is a progressive Democrat we can depend on and one of the strongest advocates in the Senate in the fight against climate change. Her opponent, Republican Carly Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett Packard, strongly opposes a woman's right-to-choose and fired 20,000 people at HP - and then took a $45 million golden parachute.
This election is a choice between giving power to extreme radical Republicans, or strengthening progressive voices in the Senate.
Please join me in this critical fight to elect Proven Progressives who aren't afraid to put it all on the line for working families. Remember, the candidate with the most donations by October 6 will win a major contribution from Opportunity and Renewal PAC.
It's time to stand up and fight for America. Thank you.
Senator Jeff Merkley
