Yesterday, I posted a diary that detailed the idea of using social networking to help impact the vote this year. I did a very poor job - I didn't elucidate why we should do this, and why it will work.
So, today, I'm back again to give it another try. Better explained, better organized, and I hope you all will give this a shot - because I think it could be a very effective weapon in blunting the supposed enthusiasm gap and pulling independent voters to our side of the fence.
Therefore, I introduce the concept of the Campaign Bomb: An coordinated movement of a video, audio clip, or news story across social media in order to elevate the standing of one of our own or to remind voters just how out of step and dangerous the Republicans taking back the Congress will be, and just how reprehensible these GOP-Tea Party-Extremists really are. Why do this?
- The Republicans have used the Tea Party movement to nationalize the midterm election campaign. The minute that these crazy candidates started winning and getting national attention, we started gaining in the polls. By keeping the contrast between concerned, competent and good for all Americans (that's us) and crazy, racist, self-interested and incompetent (that's them), that will continue to nationalize the potential negatives of a Republican congress. A nationalized visible message won't blunt the local efforts of our candidates, but it will certainly reinforce the larger messages of how much better Democrats are, and how dangerous this crop of Republicans really is.
- This community is incredibly powerful and effective at communicating with each other and organizing: Phone banks, fundraising, campaign events, etc. We can be equally effective it martialing our numbers to move campaign messaging across the Internet and in front of the general populace.
- I know that every diary comes with the opportunity to like it, tweet it, digg it, etc. And we should all keep doing that. However, when the message comes from you to your Twitter followers or your Facebook friends - AND YOU'VE PERSONALIZED IT - you have sent it to them with your tacit endorsement. You are pushing it across a social network and asking them to do the same - whereas the same video or news story will just sit on a YouTube waiting for people to find it or will be here, which is great, but preaching to the choir.
- If we all move the same item across the Internet in the same time period, the chances of anybody seeing it increases because of it's increased visibility.
- This is really easy to do, it doesn't take much time, and it costs nothing. Can you find a reason not to?
- The effect of sending out at least one of these every day long-term for 5 weeks will be to reinforce concerns about the extreme nature of these Republicans and the positive feelings there are (and, yes there are) for the President and the Democrats.
- The math here is very viral. If 100 of us move this across the Internet, and each of us gets this in front of 100 people, that's a layer of 10,000 people right off the top. And that's just right off the top.
So will you give it a try? Here is my suggestion for the first Campaign Bomb (this was a hard choice - there's just too much out there):
