Ok, with the latest injunction by the 9th Circuit, its time to change the plan of attack. It´s pretty obvious that Obama doesn´t want to end DADT... if he did, he would. Talk is cheap. One would thing coming from a biracial couple, he, out of anyone, would be empathetic to the plight of Gay rights.
So what´s next? There are 2 thoughts here... one is legal, one is more radical. If, after Monday, the ruling is upheld, its time to attack from other angles. First, there needs to be a National "Coming out in the Military Party". Dan Choi can lead the way, and encourage all servicemen and women to walk into their commanders offices on one day, say, in a month, and tell them they are gay. If 6-10% of the population is gay, the same formula, (if not higher) probably holds true for the military. What are they going to do, discharge all of them? The military is pathetically short of troops to begin with.. a mass coming out day would emasculate the troop levels. Why should Gays and Lesbians risk their lives any more for a society that refuses to let them speak their truth? If even the announcement of such an event were to happen, chances are a solution would be found before the coming out day.
Second... historically speaking, Gays were allowed to serve in the military with the full knowledge of Generals. Baron Von Steuben comes to mind. For those unfamilar, the Baron was a Prussian soldier who was forced out of the Prussian Army for his fondness for men. He found his way to George Washingtons ragtag Valley Forge hideout, where Washington employed to him to train the troops during the winter there. He taught them sanitation and hygiene, order and drills. If it wásn´t for gay Von Steuben, the Union Jack in some form would be flying over the US today. General Washington knew of his leanings, and hired him anyway. Thats de facto acceptance of Gays in the military´since the founding of the republic. After the war, he still served in the military as a General under President Washington. When he died, he left his estate to his parnter. Obviously George didn´t have an issue with him. He knew a qualified soldier when he saw one. So historically, there is a precedent. From the founding days of the US.
Finally, the psycological war. The Generals are so concerned about the "integration" of Gay and Lesbian soldiers, and the moral of the troops. The Gay and Lesbian and pro repeal people should be asking these questions... if the US is suppose to have the best troops in the world, why can´t they handle a policy that every other coalition force has had in effect for years? Are US soldiers not capable of taking orders? Soldiers are used to being told what to do. What the Generals are saying is the US military isn't capable of change, and isn´t capable of taking direct orders. They can obey orders to go into a firefight, but they can´t handle integration ( with troops that are already gay serving next to them). Mock the military for not being professional. how pathetic is it that our allies soldiers can handle the new paradigm but ours can´t? US troops fight side by side with gay out coalition forces. So where´s the problem? They alreay ARE serving with out soldiers. It´s pretty obvious the way to defeat the US military is for an enemy to field an entire army of gay and lesbian soldiers. Like Laday Gaga said.... get out if you can´t handle it. Pampering soldiers on DADT is opening up a can of worms for the military. If surveys need to be done for DADT, why don´t they do surveys on if soldiers think we should be in Afghanistan. All these questions need to be asked.
In summation, all history books talk of Baron von Steuban´s contributions to the revolution. There is a precedent already. A national coming out day may put the fear of god into the god fearing leaders. Imagine the world press covering it. Questions concerning how the world´s best military is not capable of taking orders of instituting procedures need to be asked. So far, Gays and Lesbians have been on the defense.. defending why they should be allowed to serve. It´s time to go on the attack. When the enemy is stopping your advance, you attack from the flank.
