I stand here in shock at what just occurred in this country.

The Democratic Party sat back as a whole and allowed a bunch of miscreants to win on a big lie, corruption allowed the corporations to fully take over.

Where do I go when I become a citizen?

I just read Andrew Sullivan's blog about "the big lie" that was perpetuated over the last 2 years and I am in total disbelief at what just happened.  How could this happen?  I especially like this part:

If a black Republican president had come in, helped turn around the banking and auto industries (at a small profit!), insured millions through the private sector while cutting Medicare, overseen a sharp decline in illegal immigration, ramped up the war in Afghanistan, reinstituted pay-as-you go in the Congress, set up a debt commission to offer hard choices for future debt reduction, and seen private sector job growth outstrip the public sector's in a slow but dogged recovery, somehow I don't think that Republican would be regarded as a socialist.

This is the era of the Big Lie, in other words, and it translates into a lot of little lies—"death panels," "out-of-control" spending, "apologies for America" etc.—designed to concoct a false narrative so simple and so familiar it actually succeeded in getting into people's minds in the midst of a brutal recession. And integral to this process have been conservative "intellectuals" who should and do know better, but have long since sacrificed intellectual honesty for the cheap thrills of enabling power-grabs. And few lies represent this intellectual cooptation of talk radio/FNC propaganda better than the lie that Obama has publicly rebutted the idea of American exceptionalism

This in essence says exactly what happened.

How could educated republicans allow this to stand? Where are the grownups in the republican party?

This country has been just taken over by a bunch of rabblers who have no idea what they are doing and the majority of Democrats sat back on their arses and let it happen.

I hear people saying tha voting in this country is so important because people died for the vote but it does not look like most Americans take it that seriously to me.

How could you vote for President and just check out like your job was done? Don't most Democrats understand that it takes a long time to bring about change? One never gives up.  Look at the African-Americans who fought day after day and year after year to get their rights.  They never gave up because one issue was not done.  How could people sit on their bums because their one issue is not taken care of.

As a soon-to-be citizen I am quite baffled.  I dreamt of coming to this country all my life and finally I am close to becoming a part of it in a big way but now I feel so despondent about what I see.

I am a liberal/progressive but the more I look at the Democratic Party I see them compromising away the very things they should hold dear and take a stand on. The President seems at a loss and everyone is just flailing aroung as the country is being taken over by the most uneducated bunch of morons I have ever seen.

I have totally pulled back from watching anything political anymore.  I do not watch Ed, Rachel, Keith or any of them anymore. I love them and they are doing the best they can but...

I am just tired.

Nowadays, I am only watching local news and the BBC. I cannot stand the fighting and posturing and calling names and acting out anymore.  Nowadays I turn to comedy and am watching shows that make me laugh and lighten my spirit. I have to do this to remain sane and healthy because ingesting this toxic stuff day after day is not healthy.

I have come to this decision to back away because i do not see how I can do anything to bring about positive change anymore.  Looks like the crazys have to run their course and I have to just let them. Life will go on whether I am here or not because i do not have a say in anything as a Permanent Resident. I can only watch and cross my fingers until I do become a citizen.

I just do not know who to trust anymore.  The journalist all seem to be co-opted and they cannot even stand up to FOX. One by One CNN,ABC,CBS, NBC have all come under the spell of FOX.  They just follow whatever crap FOX puts out and allows it to spread by repeating it.

I am watching this and thinking that I am in the Twilight Zone and it will all get back to a place of rationality but this shite is for real.
This is just incredible!

Then Tucker Carlson turned around and did this whole impersonating thing with regards to Keith O and it seems as if he is going to get away with it.

It seems like the more you behave badly the more rewards you reap in this country.

No wonder this happened:

Central Fla. prof offers deal to cheating studentsTHE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A business management professor at the University of Central Florida is offering his cheating students a deal: Confess and take a four-hour ethics class and their college transcripts will be wiped clean.

Richard Quinn says he found out that as many as a third of his 600 seniors at the Orlando school had cheated on a recent midterm. He says a student anonymously dropped off a copy of the test with the answers. Every student had to retake the exam this week.

Students had been expecting a lecture on mergers and acquisitions, but instead, Quinn offered his deal. The lecture has been captured on a YouTube video.

He says those who don't turn themselves in and instead get caught face the prospect of not graduating.

He tells ABC News that about half the cheaters have confessed.

If these leaders do not get in gear we will have a bunch of losers running for President in future generations.

Right now when I become citizen I do not know who to vote for.
I am very sad about this and am hoping that common sense prevails soon.

For Gods sake know what you have in this country and stop taking it forgranted.  Get out there and take your country back before all is lost.

Please am begging you get engaged as citizens of this country and put this damn car back on the road! Many of us who are hoping to one day become American are depending on you.

The republicans only used this as a mantra to win in 2008 but as an outsider looking in they do not seem to really care about this country or value its importance in the world.  They only want to win regardless to who they hurt.  Don't let them consolidate in 2012.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

The noble myth of democratic self governance and mistaken it for the rather more crass reality of representative republics. Other than the cuckoo clock the Swiss gave us Chauvanism and democracy. The two things are interlinked. Calvinism took root in the English Independent congregationalists. This is also the population that first settled the English speaking parts of north America.  These people on both sides of the Altantic were bible thumping, gun toting, money grubbing oportunistic, elitist exploiters.

The same dumb basterd yahoos and hornswagglers, ranters,  hypocritical preachy assholes you see today are the same shysters, rack renting theives and politicalx charlatan. Who started 'modern democracy'. Live with it in all its terrifying awesomeness. Or ignore it.

If you can pass the recently dumbed-down citizenship test, you will know more about our government than most born-in-the-USA citizens.

  •  I understand your frustration (8+ / 0-)

but first, I want to give you a pre-welcome to citizenship.  Despite the ugly things in this country, it seems that you still want to embrace what has the potential for good.

My complaint is that able bodied voters in this country sat on their asses and I know, sure as shit, they will complain about the impending devastation.  I hope they learn a lesson, but I doubt it.

We are a flawed nation -- like every single other one.  We are not all arrogant or stupid or lazy.  Just look at many diaries on this site where strangers reach out to help a stranger; remember the war dead, offer skilled advice on health, families and law.

I truly hope your special day of citizenship is a good one for you -- if you realize we aren't all assholes -- just your typical flawed folks.

  •  Your statement is correct (5+ / 0-)

The Democratic Party sat back as a whole and allowed a bunch of miscreants to win on a big lie, corruption allowed the corporations to fully take over.

But do not underestimate the size of the rightwing noise machine and i do not just mean Fox. CNN, ABC  and some MSNBC anchors were cheering the GOP all the way.

The had about 90% of the MSM giving them free air time while blacking the president out, how do you beat that?

Quite honestly, even if you think David Cameron is the bees knees, you would still be a Liberal here.

The Lib Dems, before they sold out, would be Communists, and the British National Party would have just won the House of Representatives.

Americans, on the whole, do not have the first idea what it is like to be European. The bullshit they swallowed was the American Dream.

It's our job, and the job of all progressive Americans, to rescue that Dream and give it back to America.

  •  I really wish I had (0+ / 0-)

a word of comfort for you.
There was a movie called An American Tale
and it was done by Spielberg.  Few people caught that this movie was highly political.  It was cute and lovable but the underlying theme was Immigrants who had come to America and Fifel (the little mouse) and his family believed there were no cats in America and the streets were paved with cheese.  Boy were they fooled !
Even from the landing at the Statue of Liberty, there was confusion and Fifel got lost in America dodging cats and looking for family or friends.
That about sums it up.  We have a lot of fat cats in America and the streets are not paved with cheese.  Nor are they paved with blood like in some countries.  We are supposed to form a more perfect union and that really takes teamwork.  We need a messenger to really form a more perfect union and the messenger should be We the People.  Raise up and make your voice and vote count.  Welcome, by the way.  I included a little snip from American Tale and if you haven't seen it, please do.

    •  Huh? (0+ / 0-)

"An American Tail" was a very popular movie. Hell, they even sold toys at McDonalds, and had a sequel. Not really a obscure movie. I even recall Jimmy Stewart was in it, or maybe in the sequel. Not sure I was only around 9 or so. I did get a toy in a happy meal though.

      •  I never said it was obscure (0+ / 0-)

or not popular.  I said, the majority of those watching did not catch all the great political undertones about no cats in America.  Some just thought it was a cute movie.  I still love that movie and loved the way the truth was told without offending anyone.  Good for Speilberg !

  •  Just Vote. (0+ / 0-)

The best rational for voting I have ever read is paraphrased as:
Vote in every election, there may not be one single person or thing that you want to vote in favor of, but there are always a number of people and things that you will want to vote against.

With regards to choosing a party, register as a Democrat, if after a few elections you believe another party will better serve your interests then switch parties.

I don't do symbolic gestures  or false equivalences, so third parties and the notion that as weak as they may be that Democrats are equally as bad as what the Republicans have done and are sworn to continue doing is simply Bull.

    Congratulations on your impending citizenship.

  •  I look at the direction the country is headed and (0+ / 0-)

think maybe I should talk to the kids about college in Canada as the first step in getting outta here. But as that is not likely, I am also trying to guide them in choices that will keep them in the dwindling middle class.

Also congratulations and I think I missed the part about why you are still looking forward to coming here.

  •  Distinguish Between Voting and Activism (0+ / 0-)

The Republican choice is never acceptable so your voting choice is as simple as it can be.

But the party as you recognize is very ineffective. The progressive movement needs to take on the project of education and messaging, independent of the party.

The party is the last bit of the nonrightwing that's going to take a progressive action, and it's never going to do strong messaging or education. That's got to come from a progressive movement.
