Remember how commander guy lead us to war supposedly due to the threat of the threat of an Iraqi nuclear program. As presented before the UN, the threat was that Iraq would nuke us. Now follow me after the jump for analysis on the decision by the UN to allow Iraqi nuclear programs to resume
Last week the UN Security Council officially permitted Iraq to develop a nuclear program. This is to be a "civilian" nuclear program. We have countries such as Iran which claim to have a "peaceful civilian" nuclear program that is deemed to be a threat by the international community due to the threat of nuclear weapons. Now if Iraq & Iran will both have some potential for a nuclear weapons program how does this not devolve into a full blown nuclear arms race? Who else will want nukes next?
In the region Iran may have a nuclear program. Pakistan has nukes. Israel most certainly has nukes. Turkey is also holding a nuclear arsenal at the behest of the US. One would think that nuclear proliferation would be in the forefront the minds of the UN & world leaders. Again, commander guy used this as an excuse to lead us to war, and it was compelling enough for some at least lukewarm international support.
Now Iraq is still a country in which the Shi'ite-dominated government could become a complete puppet of Shi'ite Iran. Or it could once again devolve into full blown civil war. Any number of things could go wrong, it is not yet the picture of stability. Why is it okay for them to have nuclear ambitions? Didn't Israel bomb them over this once before? I don't see how a nuclear Iraq is a good idea at this point.
