I normally do not jump on the trash-huffpo bus. Sure, they act as if we landed on the moon 24/7 with their bigger than-life-headlines, and they jump at the slightest bit of school-ground gossip with a giddy smile splashed across their face (okay, that's just in my imagination, but it's the picture they paint). However for the most part, the political writers there are very good at what they do and are as smart as they come. So I keep on reading. Today I am fuming.
Below the fold, if you will...
Peter King, Leading Republican, To Introduce Strict Gun-Control Legislation
That's the headline on one of their leading stories right now. And what I want to know, how one earth is anyone going to claim that Peter King is calling for gun-control, let alone strict gun-control?
Most of us here have read about his proposal already, thanks to Barbara Morrill, but I will run through the details one more time.
As the Huffington Post put it:
Rep. Peter King, a Republican from New York, is planning to introduce legislation that would make it illegal to bring a gun within 1,000 feet of a government official, according to a person familiar with the congressman's intentions.
Is that gun-control? Does that, in any way, regulate what kinds of weapons/ammunition/accessories an individual can purchase? Would this "rule" have done anything to prevent Jared Laughner from walking up to an elected official outside a grocery store fully armed? No.
Is that STRICT gun-control? Give me a f*cking break!
Last night, I was ranting about how the MSM always acts shocked and awed at how "someone like this" could get a gun after a horrific event occurs. They employed the same level of "surprise" after the Virginia Tech shooting (where my younger brother is and was attending school). Then, with complete negligence, they never actually describe how it is that someone like that got a gun. Sure, they run through the physical details of where it was purchased, but they never mention that the the folks running the NRA and other pro-gun groups literally want suspected terrorists to be able to get guns. And the next time gun rights actually come up for a debate, they will neglect to mention that those same folks believe someone like Jared Laughner SHOULD be allowed to purchase as many guns as he wants and as much ammo as he wants.
And the Huffington Post today, sadly, demonstrates exactly why it is that these nutjobs will continue to have access to weapons that are designed solely to kill lots of people quickly: because the joke of a proposal put forward by Peter King is called "strict gun-control" by even the liberal media.
