This is going to be a short diary. First, I read in the Milwaukee Journal today that the Wisconsin State Legislature, along with their new Republican Gov. Scott Walker, plan to pass legislation making it illegal to vote in Wisconsin without a photo ID. They plan to do this quickly; and then follow it up with a constitutional amendment that will lock that law into place. They have a special election coming up on April 5th, and want to have the law in place by that time. This is simply an attempt to suppress the vote. Wisconsin has a huge number of college students who vote in national elections; plus a large minority population in Milwaukee and Racine. It appears they are going to do anything to try to stop President Obama from winning this important state.
As I mentioned in the title, I have a great fear of what the next 22 months will bring, leading up to November 2012. Not only legislatively, but in terms of violence. It seems that instead of toning down their hate speech since last Saturday; the right is amping it up. I believe this will only get worse as we near the election, especially if President Obama's poll numbers look good. I have not seen anything like it in this country since the Viet Nam war; and I truly fear there will be more blood shed in the coming 22 months.
I think it is imperative that liberals do not engage in hate speech or personal attacks of any kind. We fight for our issues with every ounce of passion we have; but we don't make personal attacks on our opponents. Not only is that the right thing to do; but it will show a strong contrast between the left and right, which will not be lost on those important independent voters.
Last Saturday was horrific. We need to do our part to make sure there are no more such events; while at the same time making the American people hear our positions on all issues.
