I'd like to start a diary series that collects personal narratives about white privilege, both from the perspective of those who have it, and from the perspective of those who don't possess it, but see it in action. Ideally, I'd like to publish at least one diary a week from DK members writing on this topic. I'm particularly interested in diaries that address the intersection between white privilege and political action/organizing, but all diaries on the topic are welcome.
The underlying intention is to provide a rich resource for white DK readers who are interested in examining our own political practices in a constructively self-critical manner. How does white privilege work in liberal and progressive political organizations? How can white liberals and progressives check ourselves to make sure we're not unconsciously taking advantage of our privilege? Can white privilege be used to break down racist structures instead of to build and sustain racist structures? What observations do our non-white allies have about the role of privilege in our activism and our interests? How can we bring our practice more in line with our principles?
If you're not yet a member of the White Privilege Working Group, you can follow us or request a membership if you want to submit contributions. And if you're interested in writing a diary for the series, please contact me.
