If you are like me, you picked up the art of quilting largely from books. I know I have some I turn to repeatedly – I am sure you do, too!
Here are a few of the quilting books I love. Please share yours in the comments!
Nickel Quilts: Great Design From 5 Inch Scraps by Pat Speth. This book inspired me to mentally break down blocks into “units” – like half square triangles and four patches. Beginners can find useful techniques in this book – and its sequels. And it may inspire you to cut and collect a variety of 5 inch squares…
Once you look at blocks as being made of units, you can use a “bible” of block patterns. At least one. Here are a couple:
501 Rotary-Cut Blocks by Judy Hopkins (the compilation of her “Around the Block” books)
5,500 Quilt Block Designs by Maggie Malone
If you are exploring log cabin designs, this is the go-to book, in my opinion:
Log Cabin Quilts Unlimited by Patricia Cox
Hand appliqué? This is the book I am using to teach myself:
Baltimore Basics: Album Quilts From Start to Finish by Mimi Dietrich
And for hand quilting, the master was Roxanne McElroy, sadly passed away too young. Her company, Roxanne International, is still run by her daughter (and I still buy my needles and marking pencils from them). Roxanne wrote a classic work:
That Perfect Stitch
Also, Rodale has a series of books on just about every subject you can think of, quilting-wise. These are a valuable resource, as well. Here is one, Fantastic Finishes.
Now it is your turn. Please share your favorite quilting books!
But before you do, one quick show-and-tell. Last week, I showed how to make a heart patchwork block. Here is how DaNang65’s quilt is shaping up:
This is an open thread for quilters to share their work, their ideas and inspirations, and to enjoy each others' company. Welcome!
