Our governor's a Democrat. Our House and Senate are Democrat majorities.
And they propose to follow Republican patterns and restrict public employee's unions right to negotiate on health care?
WTF?
House lawmakers voted overwhelmingly last night to strip police officers, teachers, and other municipal employees of most of their rights to bargain over health care, saying the change would save millions of dollars for financially strapped cities and towns.
I understand cities and towns are cash-strapped. I also understand my property taxes are already pretty darned high, and I fork over as much to the state in income taxes as I do to the Fed.
But I also recognize that our public employees have already taken a hit through this recession. They've worked extra hours without pay, they've been furloughed, they've been laid off.
I used to say, cops in our area overwhelmingly vote Republican and maybe what happened in Wisconsin, Michigan, and elsewhere will open their eyes.
Now they're seeing that Democrats are proposing the same.
Dumb move. Dumb, dumb, dumb. We could have earned the vote of every cop, firefighter, and public employee in Massachusetts by saying "We won't go there."
Time to alert state Reps, Senators, and the Governor know this is a BAD idea.
