A magnitude 5.3 earthquake has toppled several buildings in southern Spain, near the town of Lorca, killing at least four people,
The quake was only 1km deep which is 0.6 miles.
Lorca Mayor Francisco Jodar told local radio the four deaths were caused by falling debris and cave-ins.
Old buildings, including a clocktower, were badly damaged by the quake, which followed a smaller 4.4-magnitude quake about an hour earlier.
Spain's Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has deployed emergency military units to the scene, the Spanish EFE news agency reported.

According the the Spanish newspaper El Pais, the death toll is now 7.

There have been cracks in roads and overpasses, so extreme caution is recommended to prevent further victims. The tunnel of the A-7 in the direction of Andalusia has collapsed vehicles. The DGT has asked the drivers not intending to visit the area and the Government has mobilized the Emergency Military Unit.
Dozens of inmates have been injured and sick in the hospital Rafael Méndez de Lorca and have been evacuated to hospitals in Murcia, Cartagena and Cieza.

Two buildings, including a nursing home, have collapsed and a number of others damaged. The tower of the church of Santiago in Lorca has been split and two houses have been destroyed. There are fears people may be trapped inside collapsed buildings. Emergency military units have been deployed to the scene.
