Greetings, Cranky Users! I have been urgently requested to post a Cranky Users diary, because there are those of you out there who are terribly cranky and wish a place to vent. Far be it from me to disappoint my friends! And also, I am rather cranky myself, because I was prevented by an important real-life commitment from viewing the exciting NN 11 panel The State of Daily Kos in the DK4 Era live on Saturday (as well as, from attending NN 11 in the first place). I had sort of been assuming I'd be able to view this panel later, because, you know, this is the 21st century. We may be destroying the natural world at a great rate, but we certainly do have video! Well, so, maybe I'm just stupid, but if it's somewhere, I can't figure out where. The original livestream diary does indeed have a video I can cause to start playing, but what it plays isn't that panel. I'll admit that it plays a different thing other than the DK4 panel every time I try, but I don't feel lucky enough to keep pulling the lever. My kingdom for a linky! Just because I so want to hear Markos say that we have "just the right amount of assholeness".
One can follow some of the session's points in the comment thread of the livestream diary, though, so I guess the universe might be doing me a favor by not supplying me with more video to watch. In much the same way, it's apparently protecting me from frittering away an hour each day watching a full podcast of Countdown, by having Current TV supply its podcast subscribers with only little scissored-up bits.
Well, never mind, my dears! Let's slide below the squiggle and talk about a couple of other matters instead. We wouldn't want to get our assholeness out of balance!
First of all, back in the early days of the now-concluded Netroots Nation, elfling posted a diary addressing only a few updates. The most interesting one from a Cranky perspective was, there are now sufficiently few bugs that the bug report link has been removed from the upper right corner of the screen! And this does not mean that you have to be wilier and find the link in an old Cranky Users diary -- it means they're not using it any more! Not looking for/at them! elfling asks that, if we have bugs to report, we use the tech support form OR report them to her in a comment in a diary of hers (I imagine PM would be okay also). Instead of the bug report link, there are now links to Comics and Elections up there.
elfling also introduced to her readers the new Daily Kos Photo Cooperative, whose group diaries explain its mission and operation in detail. If you need a photo for a diary at Daily Kos, you can go to the co-op's archive on smugmug and use the pictures without obtaining prior permission. (There's a link to the archive in the big orange box at the bottom of the homepage, under DK Network.) The photos in the archive are already tagged with proper attribution, as you can see along the right side and in the mouseover caption of this excellent co-op photo. To use the photos outside of Daily Kos, you do need to seek prior permission from the group, and if you have questions, or would like to submit photos, you should also contact the group. This diary by Meteor Blades is a good source of detailed information about how to use the photos, and also about how to contribute to the cooperative.
Next, a reminder, I think a welcome one, for those who may not have seen the announcement a couple of weeks ago: the Recommended tag now maintains itself automatically! It adds itself to any diary that reaches the Rec List, and, as elfling stated and I believe some Cranky commenters demonstrated, it cannot be falsely added or removed, because it will correct itself. So if you are still hastening to add the tag to diaries on the Rec List, in case they might drop off without being recognized, relax!
And now, a Nurse Kelley update: Nurse Kelley has a new antihistamine that's been making her feel better for a couple of days now, and she's very hopeful her current medications will really do the trick. Meanwhile, she is still quite Cranky, as we might hope. She sends her love to the Cranky Users, along with the following instructions:
They need to go back to the DK3 tagging software, which showed all previous tag versions including who did what... Second, when are they going to add the number of comments to the end of each diary?
Blessings upon elfling, who addresses so many of our concerns. She has recently stated in a comment that previous tag versions are captured but not currently viewable, and in another comment that our ability to see the previous versions is in the works. No, I don't know when it'll be ready. Kvetch in the comments and maybe someone will take pity on us. As to showing the number of comments at the end of each diary (I'm assuming Kelley means at the end of the comments), I've seen nothing about this for a while. Although I'd like to lure her out to rail about it, I'm not holding my breath... |
It's ridiculously late at night as I write, my Cranky friends, so perhaps this is enough to give you a comment thread to run with, eh? As always, please discuss your questions or problems with the site (or not), offer help to others if you have information, and be excellent to each other.
WHERE TO TURN: LINKS
☀ For more stuff sort of like this, the Cranky Users group.
☀ For lots of official detail about the site and its workings, the DK4 FAQ (frequently-asked questions). The main Daily Kos FAQ is still here.
☀ To get immediate response for technical help or urgent site problems, the contact form (be sure to select the tech support radio button). Note that THE BUG REPORT FORM HAS BEEN DECOMMISSIONED. To report a bug to the dev team now, you can use the tech support form, or you can comment in an elfling diary or send her a personal message. Congratulations to the development team for reducing the bug collection to a size where it can be drowned in the bathtub.
☀ For immediate catharsis, complain in a Cranky Users thread. These threads are regularly scanned by kos and developers, but it's not a guaranteed way to bring an issue to the attention of these folks. But sometimes you just need some sympathy from other cranky people! (And sometimes, other cranky people have advice that can help you.)
Our thanks to kos, the development team, and the Dkosopedia contributors for their vigorous efforts to deliver a site that works well and to help us know how to work it!
