In an ALEC November 2010 rebuttal press release to an NPR exposé on ALEC they noted this about their membership list:
ALEC is a private organization similar to membership organizations such as the YMCA.
My response is, “No you are not like the YMCA! Don’t flatter yourself.”
State legislators will proudly state their association with the YMCA in their biographies –about 95% of all ALEC members do not put their ALEC membership in their biography. ALEC members (for the most part) do not want anyone to know that they belong to this despicable organization.
In that same press release ALEC states:
If legislators are to establish laws to regulate business, they should be provided opportunities to learn from industry and policy experts how laws and regulations affect the economy.
I think that's a misprint - It was suppose to say - If legislators are to establish laws that benefit business, they should be provided with opportunities...
And yes, ALEC does do that - they provide opportunties.
In that same press release ALEC states:
In the U.S., we are fortunate to live in a free-market, free-speech society where citizens, organized groups and businesses can have a voice in the development of their laws and regulations.
Yes we are lucky – free speech is everything.
Having a list means absolutely nothing – it is only a list and means nothing.
Over the course of the upcoming elections –
it is imperative to remove ALL ALEC members from public office,
regardless of their record.
ALEC legislators are no longer representing the people –
they are working for the corporations
they must not be re-elected.
Legislators must learn that it is the voting booth that gave them this amazing opportunity to serve THE PEOPLE and the voting booth will take it away.
If ALEC has no legislators for the corporations to corrupt – ALEC IMPLODES.
And we take our democracy back.
As Thom Hartmann would say - "Tag – your it!"
Write letters to the editor. Support progressive candidates. Educate your friends and family about ALEC and why these people cannot be re-elected. If your legislator is not on the list – send them this letter or sign this petition.
