At some point, probably just a hair before it's too late, the Republicans will take some kind of a deal on the debt ceiling. Without even knowing the details, we can outline the basics of that deal. On the one side, Republicans will get an enormous cut in government spending on safety net programs for the poor. And on the other side, the American people will be spared the total destruction of their economy. That will be the deal.
When this happens, please Obama, don't celebrate this deal.
Don't walk to the podium with a smile on your face and talk about how the system works. Don't talk about how governing is all about compromise, and that through compromise we came together to solve the deficit problem. Don't talk about how this was a great victory for the American people. Don't talk about how both sides had to sacrifice.
The only two sides that will sacrifice in this deal are the poor and the middle class. And neither will gain.
Here's a better idea. Talk about how these greedy Republican thugs in the House of Representatives just threatened to blow up the American economy unless they could fulfill their sadistic fantasy of screwing over the poor. And we had no choice but to meet their sick demands. Because these grotesque, vile bastards have absolutely no regard for America's wellbeing, democracy failed, and it failed miserably. The poor and the middle class were the sad victims in a brutal economic rape.
So make the deal if you have to. But please, don't celebrate it. Tell the American people the truth. It was rotten deal, and you had no choice.
