After listening to Pres. Obama's speech last night I decided to contact our GOP Rep and let him know what I think of him and his GOP colleagues in the House. Probably completely wasted but at least I tried.
My Rep is Glenn "GT" Thompson (R) is the former head of the local GOP here in central PA's fifth district and a noted opponent of energy efficient lightbulbs.
All the arguments of the GOP about the debt and debt ceiling are absurd, and I told him so. So if you haven't contacted your GOP Rep and need some inspiration, I hope this helps.
Dear Rep Thompson,
I strongly urge you to support a compromise on the debt ceiling/reduction issue facing our nation right now. This crisis is entirely the fault of Republicans in Congress failing to act responsibly. Under Ronald Reagan we never had these problems. The Republican Party of Pres. Reagan was something to be proud of. I am so disappointed in all of you.
We need a balanced and fair approach that protects seniors and working families while making those who have more money than anyone can ever use in a lifetime contribute their fair share. These super wealthy are not "job creators." That is a myth and a lie and a talking point. Historically, there is absolutely no correlation between low taxes and job growth. None.
Another talking point lie is that the government should be like working families and live within its means. This is also garbage. I don't know any families that have no debt. We all have mortgages, car payments, credit cards. We borrow to send our kids to college. Farmers in borrow to be able to keep farming. Small businesses borrow to just to stay afloat and maybe expand a little so they can actually create some jobs.
The "all cutting and no revenue" plan of the GOP is like asking a family to reduce its income to back the level of the 1950s and then not be able to borrow money to meet expenses. If you did that to Pennsylvania families, we'd all lose our homes and farms. Our kids wouldn't go to college and we'd all lose the next generation of doctors and teachers and scientists. It would be the Great Depression all over again. Is this what you want for America? Is making Pres. Obama look bad your only goal? Or are you willing to take a stand for the people of central PA and do the right thing by raising taxes on the super wealthy so that everyone is contributing their fair share and we can get on with the business of life?
Thank you,
