Here in Texas, our cowboy Governor has been able to cultivate of image of unflappable confidence. “That coyote? Yeah, I shot it. Fire teachers, Nah, we won’t have to.”
But now that the eyes of the national press are upon him, Perry has been making mistakes. He’s had to walk back positions after they’ve drawn negative response. Is Perry the presidential candidate struggling to find his footing?
Take for instance, the flip-flop he did on The Response Prayer event. He announced the event himself, touted it as a Christian prayer event that he would be leading with the American Family Association, an anti-gay group that says that Jews, Muslims, and all other non-Christians would go to hell. One of the group directors, Bryan Fischer, has made bigoted statements on black women and the Holocaust, which he blamed on gays in the military.
Once the news came out about how extreme the American Family Association was, and the more controversy The Response garnered,
Rick Perry distanced himself, and news reports
said that Governor Rick Perry may not speak after all at this event.
But had he alienated the social conservatives he’s worked so hard to court? Several days later, Governor Perry said that he had no problem with New York allowing gay marriage:
“Our friends in New York, six weeks ago, passed a statute that said marriage can be between two people of the same sex…Well, you know what, that’s New York and that’s their business, and that’s fine with me.”
The hardcore religious right responded in a major outcry. After Governor Perry met with Tony Perkins, the head of the antigay Family Research Council, he flip-flopped on his previous statement about gay marriage and states’ rights, and made a new statement:
“It’s a small group of activist judges and frankly a small handful of states and these liberal special interest groups that are intent on a redefinition of marriage on the nation, for all of us, which I adamantly oppose,” Perry said. “Indeed, to not pass the federal marriage amendment would impinge on Texas and other states, not to have marriage forced upon them by these activists judges and special interest groups.”
Governor Perry’s flip-flopping all over the place like a stranded fish in trying to appeal to all the groups in his party. And in doing so, he’s being noticed by the national press, and losing credibility with the religious right.
What’s the next thing Governor Perry will flip-flop on? Perhaps what he said about the debt ceiling issue “not being a big deal” if the United States defaults. If we do get pushed to a default, the economic consequences will be catastrophic, and Governor Perry may just realize how fiscally irresponsible his statement was and flip-flop on his prior statement to keep his credibility with moderate voters.
