I arrived soon after the great pie fights of 2004. People always refer back to those days, the pie fights of all pie fights. The oldsters here are like warriors sitting on their rocking chairs, wearing their Dean or Gephardt or whoever caps, telling those who are newer, "Back in the day young whippersnappers there was really a pie fight and those of use who made it through have memories know what a real pie fight is. So go off and have your little arguments, but I remember when." And there would be pie fights, but none to match the grand battles of the distant past.
But now I'm wondering, has history repeated itself, is Mr. Santayana correct, are we in a real pie fight now? I can never remember anything this brutal (I know I wasn't there when it all started - so sue me). People rending the garments and pulling their hair and screaming for their position. I've got to tell you it reached its apex for me when when one diarist claimed to see a swastika somehow hidden in a front page cartoon - maybe, if you tilt your head to the right and squint, and aren't really sure what a swastika looks like (It[s okay, I like pie!).
The battle seems to be coming in waves, sort of like the battalions in the First World War, coming out of their trenches and charging straight into gunfire. They pick up a hundred yards in sound and fury, and then the other side blows their whistle and pushes them back. And about as much gets accomplished as in the traditional trench warfare. At this moment the Obamabots are holding sway in recommended diaries. But I have little doubt the the Obamahats are marshalling their forces for a counter attack and next time I sign on the argument will have moved a hundred yards in the other direction.
So how about it you oldsters, you true originals watching all this from your front porch, remembering your younger days. Is this now a REAL pie fight?
