A Democratic President has put our already pathetically anemic social safety net on the chopping block and cut over a trillion dollars in spending in an economy teetering on the brink of depression. But hey, what else could he do? I mean the Tea Party is just so powerful in this country. A mere President of the United States doesn't stand a chance against them. Anyone who objects is just not facing political reality. They're living in a fantasy world. You know, one where social justice actually matters, Presidents keep their promises and Democrats don't cut safety nets. How silly.
Why resist the steamrolling of the powerless masses by the powerful few? It's just the nature of things. Face reality.
I've heard people blame progressives for not turning out in 2010 to protect our majority. Just speculating here but some of them might have felt kicked in the nads (like I did) when Obama came into office and started reappointing Bush's people instead of progressives and put the Wall Street foxes in charge of the hen house. I mean who exactly was that supposed to reassure? All those millions of Obama voters (like me) who had voted for change? Damned progressives.
But hey! It's all good.
So what if you haven't had a job in three years and have lost everything you ever owned and worked for? So what if grandma is sick and needs more medicare not less? So what if millionaires and billionaires get tax breaks for exporting our jobs while everyone else gets screwed to the wall?
And listen, get real, how realistic is it, really, to expect millionaires, billionaires and corporations to pay their taxes? It's not like this society made them rich. It's not like they drive on roads or use electricity or government services. Why should they have to be inconvenienced just because people are dying and suffering and losing everything? My God! Would you just wake up and smell the music?
And quit your carping about all the trillions of taxpayer dollars we are foolishly wasting on unnecessary and immoral wars. Do you really expect them to stop it? Just because it's cruel, mean, evil to the bone, utterly without justification and bankrupting the country? Come on. Get real. Why even suggest it?
And quit yer bitchin' about torture. It's a cruel world. Just accept it. Remember the Indians? Shit happens.
And hey, this economy-gutting, job-killing, debt ceiling kabuki deal is not such a bad thing. Sure some people will die, be kicked out into the street, be refused medical services, some poor children might have to go without food or shelter, but be realistic – it was the best deal we could get. Just take your shit sandwich and pipe down.
Robert Reich: Why the Debt Ceiling Deal Strengthens the Radical Right and Weakens America
The deal's spending cuts increase the odds of a double-dip recession and strengthens the political hand of the radical right.
Anyone who characterizes the deal between the President, Democratic, and Republican leaders as a victory for the American people over partisanship understands neither economics nor politics.
The deal does not raise taxes on America’s wealthy and most fortunate — who are now taking home a larger share of total income and wealth, and whose tax rates are already lower than they have been, in eighty years. Yet it puts the nation’s most important safety nets and public investments on the chopping block.
It also hobbles the capacity of the government to respond to the jobs and growth crisis. Added to the cuts already underway by state and local governments, the deal’s spending cuts increase the odds of a double-dip recession. And the deal strengthens the political hand of the radical right.
Yes, the deal is preferable to the unfolding economic catastrophe of a default on the debt of the U.S. government. The outrage and the shame is it has come to this choice.
Okay. So the radical right wins, the left loses, but come on, isn't that the natural order of things? To expect anything else is just fantasy, right?
Grow up ya damned hippies!
