When I read GlowNZ's rec-listed diary about Americans for Truth about Homosexuality having its tax-exempt status yanked, I expected to find the religious right and wingnutosphere whining about the IRS persecuting a good Christian organization. Well, it turns out to be a lot simpler than that. According to ExGay Watch, it seems Peter LaBarbera couldn't be bothered to file the required tax forms for his outfit.
According to the IRS, the tax-exempt status of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH) was revoked on 5/10/2010 (PDF). The reason for this action is listed by the reporting organization Guidestar as a “failure to file a Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-N, or 990-PF for 3 consecutive years.” These forms are required of legitimate non-profit organizations for review by the IRS and the public.
Well, well. No wonder the fundies haven't been rushing to LaBarbera's defense.
Something else worth noting. AFTAH lost its tax exemption in 2010, yet LaBarbera only alerted his followers to this today. Hmmm--did LaBarbera claim to be a nonprofit when he knew he no longer was one? Inquiring minds want to know!
