I know it's really hard to miss the crazy - even without the crazy eyes on the cover of Newsweek - but I'm consistently floored by the stupid.
Why does no one point out that she honestly didn't seem to know what the debt ceiling vote was about? I suppose the entire media just assumed she really did know, but nothing she said could have possibly led anyone to this conclusion. She repeatedly said that raising the debt ceiling would give Obama a $2 trillion plus blank check. As far as I can tell, she thought raising the debt ceiling would allow Obama to spend this amount of money however he wanted. I know this sounds too stupid to be believed, but this really is what she said - repeatedly.
Also Bachman clearly didn't understand the hostage-taking nature of the negotiation. Her immediate and unwavering position was to shoot the hostage. What did she want in exchange for not shooting the hostage? Nothing. She just wanted to shoot the hostage. She seemed not to understand that refusing to raise the debt ceiling was leverage - she saw it as an end in itself.
When criticized about her lack of substantive legislation, she points - in all seriousness and with a completely straight face - to the Lightbulb Freedom of Choice Act. That's so ridiculous as to defy caricature.
Apparently the entire media thinks Bachman is making political maneuvers - positioning herself to the far right, getting the support of the Tea Party, etc. However, I see real evidence that this woman is just profoundly stupid. It's just hard to see the stupid through the crazy.
