Our children are always our beloved children, even when they're all grown-up.
Some days are just weird. Today was one of those days.
And yes, he's starting the rabies shots tomorrow...before rugby practice.
The event as it played out on facebook:

Ben C:
so check this out. series of events occurs that are so unlikely and convoluted that they could really only happen to me:
1. last night enjoyed a few drinks after practice with my fellow ruggers. got home and played on computer for a bit.
2. noticed cat running around freaking out and trying to kill something. then noticed there is a bat flying around my apartment.

Ben C: 3. cat gets bat cornered in closet (may have bitten it - not sure). i get cats into living room, and herd bat out the open screen door in bedroom.
4. wake up this morning with cat sleeping by my head, as per usual
5. cat has extracted tooth, which causes him to drool sometimes. he does this, while standing over my head, and drool goes in my nose (awesome under any circumstance!)
6. now i am waiting for uw triage nurse to call me back and tell me if i need a rabies shot(s)
7. the end

Ben C update: triage nurse stumped as to whether this constitutes rabies exposure, tells me to call CDC (not joking). i call CDC, nice lady named Lisa stumped as to whether this constitutes rabies exposure. says can't offer specific advice, but if exposure did happen and i don't get vaccine i will die. awesome!

Jennifer S: Oh for gods sake! I hope you don't need to get those shots but I don't want you to die either..

Ben C update: i have no idea what i should do. finding this situation funny, irritating, and sort of kafka-esque all at the same time. solution: call mom and see what she thinks i should do (doesn't it always come back to that when life throws us these little curve balls?)

Ronald M: oh no!, this is the second time where a bat has entered your place. You really need to seal off that opening between window and AC because bats are coming in there..just sayin

Ben C conclusion: so tomorrow is "day 0" on a course of rabies shots that will cover 4 injections over 14 days

Ben C: YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!! So, I just got off the phone with the nurse from uw who called me back to say that the dr. was referring earlier to a specific 'immune globulin' injection that would be injected into a bite site, but i should still come in for the 4 vaccine injections. Apparently there was a misunderstanding with the first person who called me back. Now they say that based on their CDC guidelines it is still reasonable to get the shots, but given the very unusual nature of my possible exposure it is up to me. Back to square one. I love how they won't actually give you medical advice when you ask for medical advice. I have half a mind to just grab the needle out of the nurses hand tomorrow and inject myself since I seem to have taken over the role of medical care provider at this point. This whole thing is just crazy!

Ben C: Every time i try to pin them down for an answer it's all 'well you probably weren't exposed.' Then i say 'so i don't need the shots.' Then they reply 'well it's up to you, but if you were exposed an untreated infection is usually fatal.' What the hell do you say to that?

Tracy S: Better safe then sorry- and if one comes back in in the next few days you can get grab at it all you like:)

Sam L: WOW ... Where to start ... First off, Ron M exposed a key component, this is the second time!!! First time a bat flies into my place is the last - When friends on facebook are telling you where the bats are getting in, time to either fix the hole or become friends with the bats... Forget writing a book - You need a reality TV show!!! If I was your doctor my advice is go back to #1 in what happened :-)
