I thought I would share this with my New York City friends and neighbors (and anyone else, of course, that loves surfing). Light on text, but big on video. It's an amazing little short documentary, entitled "Subway Surfers".
Living in New York City is amazing in its diversity. This group of winter surfers is just one more subculture, among the many we find here. They all gather at Far Rockaway Beach, an urban surfing oasis in Queens, New York, and come from all across the city and from all walks of life--on the A train.
The documentary (6 minutes) was made by one of my students for his senior thesis film. He began shooting last November, using a 7d Canon as well as a Go Pro (underwater camera), and continued through March, re-shooting and editing as he went along. It takes months to shape, form, and write even the shortest of documentaries, and he and his editor worked on it for hours and hours, readying it for our end-of-the-year student film festival in early May.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. The surfing photography is spectacular--he is an extraordinary young photographer/videographer and there is terrific aerial footage of New York City. If you'd like to see it a bit larger, click on the arrows between HD and vimeo (which most of you probably know--but just in case :D).
