I'm honestly a bit confused on this one. Weren't we all backing the two state solution?
Somehow they say supporting a Palestinian seat in the UN is akin to standing against Israel?
Why?
Why exactly is it better to pretend the Palestinian people don't exist? What good does that do anyone?
It seems to me, the only benefit Israel has by keeping the Palestinians out of the UN is to avoid international law. Right now the occupied territories exist in a sort of international limbo. So anything, which occurs within them is exempt from UN condemnation.
If there is to be a solution to this mess, both sides need to be validated. Otherwise, Israel is just the tyrannical power controlling an Arab colony. That isn't to say they are malevolent or benevolent. It just states the objective truth, that Israel wields tyrannical power over Gaza and the West Bank.
That isn't democracy. That isn't freedom. Regardless of the symbolic concessions, ultimate authority rests with Israel.
So why exactly are we defending this status quo? I'm not against Israel, but at some point the Palestinian people need legitimacy.
As long as they don't have such recognition, Israel will continue to fall victim to terrorism. The US by proxy will face the same threat. That reality will remain unless Israel removes the Palestinians from the occupied territories.
