I'll admit it-- I have a mean streak. I mostly keep it under control but it frequently whispers harsh (and admittedly sometimes mordantly funny) things in my ear. Sometimes it's easier to be snarky or flippant than sincere. So when I ran across the #30days of Good Challenge I was intrigued. How could it hurt to intentionally exercise my better self once a day? Better yet, in light of the recent Troubles here, how could I adapt those principles to the GOS?
So in the spirit of today's Challenge, I'm asking your help and advice with coming up with a 30 Days of Good Challenge I can use here on the GOS. C'mon, you know you love to give advice!
BUT FIRST: A Word From Our Sponsor:
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd and most informative commentary. We depend on your help with talent spotting. If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it to topcomments at gmail by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
The current 30 Days of Good Challenge for September is focusing on Connecting. (Today's Challenge? Ask For Someone's Advice and Take It. Tomorrow's challenge? Contact An Old Teacher.)
After the recent upheavals here, with the emphasis on banning, revoking, and HRing, how about for the month of October we have an emphasis on uniting, forgiving, appreciating, supporting, and kicking ass in a good way?
So here are some ideas I've come up with for a 30 day dk-challenge for October (with Halloween off). It's not a complete list-- you might suggest striking some or adding others.
Does anyone want to join me for this or create their own October: 30 days of Good Challenge, DKos Edition??
Here are my thoughts so far:
Day 1: Submit a Top Comment (of course!)
Day 2: Recommend a diary from the Recent List
Day 3: Visit and compliment a Community Diary you've never been to
Day 4: Send a diarist you admire a PM (“kosmail”) telling them why
Day 5: Donate $5.00 to someone's pet candidate or project
Day 6: Find a point of agreement with someone you normally disagree with
Day 7: Sign a petition from someone's diary.
Day 8: Promote someone elses diary in an Open Thread
Day 9: Use the Share button to tweet, email, or otherwise share a diary you like
Day 10: Visit a diary by someone you usually ignore or on a topic you usually overlook
Day 11: Welcome a New User by private message (kosmail)
Day 12: Buy someone a Gift Subscription....anonymously
Day 13: Be a mojo whore- give it away liberally, Tip & Rec everything you read for an entire day (except, of course, dickish stuff)
Day 14: Teach someone a site trick: How to post a picture, link to an article, etc.
Day 15: Acknowledge someone's hard work on an issue you don't follow
Day 16: Give someone a virtual gift: A bouquet of roses, a glass of champagne
Day 17: Stay out of Hidden Comments and Troll diaries
Day 18-30: ???
Of course, you can also give any other free advice you think I might could use. I'm all ears!

Thanks to tonight's Top Comments contributors! Let us hear from YOU when you find that not-so-ordinary comment.
from jnhobbs:
After days of advocacy for Troy Davis, the action diaries and personal stories, and yesterday's up and down machinations of the judicial system, Kaili Joy Gray's post, Georgia executes Troy Davis, brought word to the front page that he was gone.
Replying to a comment that simply said " a sad day", I think a gilas girl expressed what so many of us couldn't. I will say, as tragic as it was, it did have the effect of pointing virtually everybody on the site in the same direction. Rare I think.

from stcroix cheesehead:
In the diary Walkergate Revelations Prompt "Squirrel!" Cries from Walker's Allies, Giles Goat Boy posted "I have a gut feeling this is all going to end with a shocking surprise ending. I hope it's soon, but we'll keep fighting regardless," and confitesprit's reply is DKos at its best.
from maggiejean:
Some of the best comments are from JanF's J Town. A great comment from Dragon5616 with an excellent reply from laserhaas.
from bubbanomics:
Unit Zero's exciting diary on faster-than-light neutrinos got a dose of reality from science.
from pico, who loved the same thing as bubbanomics:
I love that experts hang out at this site and don't mind sharing their knowledge. In Unit Zero's diary on a a potentially game-changing report from CERN, user and particle physicist science takes the issue apart for non-experts.
From Dragon5616:
How often do you find an entire diary post summed up in three words? Well, Bindle did it in kos' Ratings abilities post.
from Julie Gulden: also about Kos' diary:
Even meta can be poked fun at by lineatus in Kos's diary
and from your humble diarist, smileycreek:
In Mark J Stern's diary We Are Troy Davis Superpole summarizes the reality of capital punishment:
Those without capital are punished.
