The story of Zainab Al-Husni
In Homs city, Bab Alsibaa neighborhood, Zainab brother: Muhammad Al-Husni was one of the the well known activists. Security & Shabiha (regime-sponsored gangs) raided his family home so many times looking for him that his family had to leave their home, they rented a home in Al-Naziheen neighborhood. As Muhammad had to stay in hiding, his 19 years old daughter had to bring groceries for the family; which is not safe due to the siege and to the poverty that took hold of Homs city under the regime collective punishment for the residents for holding peaceful anti-regime demonstrations.
On the morning of the 2nd of the month of Ramadan (coincided with the 2nd of August) the young woman was abducted, the regime had ear dropped on the family’s calls (wireless & landlines) for awhile before that. After 5 days of the abduction, the family received a phone call saying that Zainab can be returned if the “wanted” Muhammad is surrendered to security forces. They specified a place in an unsafe neighborhood, so the family was trying to find a safer place in the city for the exchange but the other side closed the phone. On the 13th of September the family was shocked when they got the news that their son Muhammad was killed at the hands of security & the intelligence agency, they went to receive his body from the Military Hospital in Homs. During that visit & by accident the family was informed that there was a 19 years old young woman in the morgue, the family went to investigate, at 1st they could not recognize her; as her head was cut off, her arms cut off from the shoulders, there were evidence of torture on her back, her face burned, & signs of burning showing on most of her body. The family was not allowed to receive their daughter till they signed promising not to video her body nor to hold a funeral procession.........

NEWS UPDATES
(country names in bold are updated from the previous diary.)
GENERAL ANALYSIS
(h/t Dibsa 9/20)-1st Arab Spring Votes More About Stalling Change
The first elections since the Arab Spring uprisings will be more about holding back change than expanding political freedoms: voting in three Gulf nations that poses no threat to old guard rulers or their efforts to unite against calls for fast-track reforms
(h/t Dibsa 9/16)-
"Stability" and "Media Freedom" in the Arab Spring
It was predictable, somewhere in the Arab Spring: the forces of security, representatives of the ruling military council, raiding offices and closing down a broadcaster

The address will focus on regional and international developments, the peace process in the Middle East and the Palestinian issue. He will also highlight Bahrain's contributions to preserving world peace, Bahrain News Agency (BNA) reported on Monday
(h/t Dibsa 9/19) - U.S. Hypocrisy on Bahrain
Now in its third year in office, the Obama Administration has never championed the cause of human rights. Its slow reaction in June 2009 to the stealing of the election in Iran and the birth of the "Green Movement" there, and its delay in backing the rebellions in Egypt, Libya, and Syria, are evidence of this problem. But two recent news items show just how bad the situation has become

Egypt should postpone its first elections following the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak so fledgling political parties can gain a foothold in the revolutionized nation, business and political leader Ahmed Said told Newsmax
(h/t Dibsa 9/20) - Egypt: The Mubarak Regime Persists
The undersigned rights organizations decisively condemn the exploitation of the political crisis between the forces of the revolution and those managing the country's affairs in the transitional period as an excuse to employ the same repressive tools and means that the regime of deposed president Hosni Mubarak used against its enemies and critics, while foregoing dialogue, negotiations, and political solutions in favor of the old security approach. Such security solutions lead to violence, oppression, and an increasing use of repressive legislation against opponents, be they political activists, media workers, or civil society and rights activists
(h/t Dibsa 9/19) - Is This What the Revolution Was All About?
The great promises of the Egyptian revolution appear to be dissipating into a chaotic state of disorder, shattering the prospect of a new democratic and progressive Egypt serving as a model to the rest of the Arab world. The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces is failing miserably to balance populism with responsible governance and regional leadership. Egypt today appears to be a floundering state with a transitional government that is rapidly losing legitimacy in the eyes of its people and losing credibility in the eyes of the international community

(h/t soysauce 9/22) - International Day of Peace
In his first speech at the UN, President Obama stated that he prohibited torture and ordered Guantanamou prisons closed. He also said he will work to cut the nuclear arsenal of the US and Russia and move towards a world without nuclear weapons. He said that peace must be pursued by actions of all nations working together and that the era of unilateralism is finished. He said he will work aggressively to advance peace based on two states: Israel and Palestine. He said, "America does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements". All were big fat LIES. And now comes Obama with new lies in front of the UN and at this International day of peace. Here he shows Palestinian leaders did not give him any briefing on history. The meeting - Western Sahara and the Arab Spring - was being held to mark the 20th anniversary of the UN-brokered ceasefire agreement which brought to an end 16 years of fighting between the Polisario Front and Moroccan forces. Under the terms of the ceasefire a referendum on self-determination was promised, but two decades later it has yet to be carried out and negotiations have remained deadlocked. One might think this is not a cause for optimism

3. go to the page of that country, click EDIT,
4. copy the mini template and fill in what the red text prompts
5. click SAVE

Egypt and the Region Liveblog Archive by unaspenser
NOTE: We renamed the original "Egypt Liveblog" to "Witnessing Revolution". From Egypt the pro-democracy fire spread rapidly. It's not clear that it will be limited by geography or ethnicity. So, we wanted a name which states what is happening yet allows us to grow with the movement, wherever that will be. The number sequence will be continuous. The group name will remain the same. Only this particular diary series within the group changed names.
