Hello, writers. Things are still pretty crazy around here, so I haven’t had time (or rather brain cells) to think up a challenge, though I do have a few questions, for which see below.
Years ago, I did the exercises in Peter McWilliams’s book Do It! Let’s Get Off Our Buts and discovered that I wanted to write children’s books. For a while, my goal was to get a children’s book published by a real, genuine New York publisher. Then later my goal became to write books that would make kids feel better about the world and their place in it and more able to face the @#$% life throws at them. (And less likely to vote Republican when they grew up.)
(Oh, and I also wanted to have books facing outward on the tables at Barnes and Noble. That would be cool.)
At one time I probably also wanted to be famous. But that’s not really a good goal if you like your privacy, as it turns out. Pseudonyms are not such a bad idea. Something to think about, if you haven’t already.
So, the first question I have is, what’s your goal in writing? Is the writing an end in itself, or is it something for your children, something you want to get published, a way to make a living?
The next question is, what are you doing to meet your goal? Are you writing something, revising it, sending it out to publishers, still trying to learn more about writing, all of the above?
And a third question—what are you writing? A mystery, a memoir, a fantasy series? Tell us as much as you feel comfortable sharing.
Tonight’s instead-of-a-challenge:
What’s your goal in writing?
What are you doing to meet it?
What are you writing?
Write On! will be a regular weekly diary (Thurs 8 pm ET) until it isn't.
