Nobel-Peace-Prize winner and one-time constitutional law professor, Barack Obama, today hailed the killing of two U.S. citizens without due process as "another significant milestone" for America.
This widely-circulated comment was made today as President Obama rattled off a host of other significant milestones achieved while (appropriately) attending a ceremony honoring the outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Below the fold are those milestones Obama went on to articulate that were, unfortunately, lost in the shuffle, but which should be equally celebrated.
And so, I give you today's other significant milestones in America...
The U.S. Defense Department planning to sell $53 million worth of weapons to a repressive, brutal and murderous regime in Bahrain represents another significant milestone for America.
Watching Bank of America charge users 5 dollars just to use a normative service – ATM cards – after bailing them out with billions of taxpayer dollars represents another significant milestone for America.
Fighting tooth-and-nail against the Palestinian U.N. statehood bid, and further damaging our diplomatic standing in the Middle East, represents another significant milestone for America.
Silently watching NYPD pepper spray peaceful protesters and use needless force against those in the #occupywallstreet movement represents another significant milestone for America.
While there were many other milestones Obama went on to articulate, let's return to the original milestone that got the ball rolling: the killing of two Americans, Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan, via drone strikes carried out by the C.I.A.
And what a milestone it was! Perhaps for the first time in U.S. history, our Commander-in-Chief authorized security personnel to murder American citizens without access to a trial or any of the protections afforded to them by the constitution. The victims I mean the justifiably-dead – al-Awlaki and Khan – were bombed based on what some consider murky intelligence and without any due process.
But as one intelligent commentator quipped today:
Note: that's a satirical, fake Dershowitz Twitter account run by an anonymous writer.
