Rick Perry has spent most of this weekend trying to control the firestorm that started when Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas, declared Mitt Romney unfit for the presidency on the grounds that he's a Mormon. The Perry camp initially claimed that it didn't select Jeffress, a claim we now know is false. Well, the folks at People for the American Way dug up evidence that strongly suggests that Perry is not only lying, but he knew what was likely coming when he asked Jeffress to endorse him at the Values Voter Summit.
Last summer, Jeffress appeared on TBN's "Praise the Lord," and declared that Mormons, Jews, Muslims and gays are all going to hell.
Considering that Perry has known Jeffress for some time, it's pretty hard to believe he didn't know about this.
A few months later, Jeffress went on his own radio show, "Pathway to Victory," and repeated the old fundamentalist canard that the Catholic Church is Satanic.
After looking at these, I don't think anyone can throw Jeremiah Wright in our faces ever again. Obama never trotted out someone like this to endorse him.
