This afternoon while eating lunch, I tuned into CNBC. At the risk of indigestion, it is still important to keep up with the top 1% and what is on their minds.
I was shocked to learn how good we have things here in America.
The interviewed guest today on CNBC was the CEO of the Carlisle Companies, David Roberts. Mr. Roberts was invited to share his wisdom on the current employment market in the US and some of the challenges faced by our country and his company.
As it turns out, Carlisle is having a lot of trouble competing for skilled and semi-skilled labor in the US. In spite of high unemployment in our country, Carlisle cannot retain decent workers. The reason you ask? Other companies competing for the same labor and, wait for it, unemployment compensation
. How can he hire people if they have an opportunity to sit around and stay on the dole rather than work? Carlisle is looking for people such as welders and other people with a trade. He went on to advise us that these people were in good supply back when our schools taught shop class and other valuable lessons (which was back when we passed school budgets rather than slash them, but I digress).
Well this news just contradicts everything the progressive and left media has been reporting. Clearly those OWS folks are just out of touch. Good thing we have 6 million dollar men like David Roberts to keep us informed.
After watching the interview, I dashed to my PC to look at all of the job postings at the Carlisle Companies website. Surely if they are in such dire straits for employees with some basic skills, there will be pleads for applicants all over it.
Here are the total listings:
Tire & Wheel 8
Construction: 29
Brake & Friction 29
Interconnect: 29
Food Service Products: 17
Corporate: 0
This is pretty impressive, even for a company that employs 11,000 (just over 1% vacancy). Of course, many of the jobs posted won't be filled immediately as per the listings. Many others are highly skilled, and not the type eligible to folks that have taken shop class in high school. And oh yeah, you have to be near one of their facilities to take the job in the first place, but don't let those things stop you.
So in conclusion, Mr Roberts has a sanguine remedy. He wants more open immigration because US workers will not take his jobs and he needs good quality folks in his businesses. Take that Tea Party !
NOTE: Sorry I had all kinds of trouble with links i.e. Roberts Pay : http://people.forbes.com/... and the transcript or vid segment of this interview was not available on the web so I was going from memory.
