REP. ERIC CANTOR, R-VA (10/10/2011): And believe it or not, some in this town have actually condoned the pitting of Americans against Americans!
Yeah, it was you!! It was like, it was... you did it in, like, wait, hold on, I just, when was that? It was you like a minute ago, remember?
REP. ERIC CANTOR, R-VA: The battle for our democracy is being fought today. ... We can take this country back.
Yeah! I think you were wearing the same shirt! I know it was from a couple of years ago, but, now look. If Republicans don't condone pitting Americans against Americans, well then, who is it that we Americans should be taking this country back from?
REP. STEVE KING, R-IA (2/19/2010): Now who are we up against? Now I want to define that enemy. They are liberals. They are progressives.

See, as it turns out, on a Venn diagram, the group of Americans that Republicans say it's not only OK but necessary to pit Americans against...
... matches up pretty well with the list of people who don't vote Republican.
Actually, there's only really one sliver of people there that the Republicans hate, but still vote Republican. Can we zoom in on that and see who it is?
Oh, Mitt Romney. Oh. All right. (wild audience applause)
But here's your problem. ... If you start adding up unions, and progressives, and liberals, and people too poor to pay income tax, and people who want to tax millionaires....
MARA SCHIAVOCAMPO, NBC NIGHTLY NEWS (10/15/2011): A new poll shows 54% of Americans view the Occupy Wall Street protests favorably. ... 73% favor raising taxes on those earning more than a million dollars a year.
Wow! It's gotta be tough to love America so much, but hate almost three-quarters of the people living in it!
Video and full transcript below the fold.
America is, and has been for quite some time, at war.
No. Not that one.
No.
Why don't I just tell you?
No! That's not the one! Let me just....
That's not even... when did that start??
No! That's not even real!! JUST LET ME TELL YOU WHAT IT IS!!!
It's a battle for the very soul of our democracy.
REP. ERIC CANTOR, R-VA (9/18/2009): The battle for our democracy is being fought today.
SEN. MARCO RUBIO, R-FL (8/30/2010): The raging battle is for America's future.
NEWT GINGRICH (6/15/2011): It's about the heart and soul of America.
REP. ERIC CANTOR, R-VA (9/18/2009): We must win this battle.
REP. ALLEN WEST, R-FL (2009): Get your musket to fix your bayonet! And to charge into the ranks....
"But before you charge, pour the powder from the powderhorn into the barrel, and then insert the musket ball, of course, followed by the wadding to tamp it down. Tamp, tamp, tamp. Do not put in the wadding first, I cannot emphasize that enough. Then add some gunpowder to the flash... hey, where's everybody going? We're almost halfway being able to shoot!"
Obviously, we're not going to fight the battle for the soul of our democracy with 18th century wheaponry. So tell us, leaders o' the Republican Party, what should we do?
REP. MICHELE BACHMANN, R-MN (10/30/2009): I'm asking people to come to Washington, D.C., by the carload.
SEN. JIM DEMINT, R-SC (6/17/2011): Take to the streets with their voices and their votes.
REP. KEVIN MCCARTHY (9/15/2011): People are trying to fight to take this country back.
REP. MIKE PENCE, R-IN (11/5/2009): Now is the time. Let your voice be heard.
REP. PHIL GINGREY, R-GA (7/29/2010): Enough is enough.
REP. TED POE, R-TX (11/5/2009): Fight for your country!
REP. MIKE PENCE, R-IN (11/5/2009): We're the American people!
REP. ERIC CANTOR, R-VA (5/4/2010): We can take this country back.
(plays air guitar) "America, fuck yeah!"
I don't know why I always make myself the bass player. Why wouldn't I be lead guitar? It's my own air band, and yet... I make myself the bass player. It really makes very little sense. (pauses) What are we talking about?
Yes! Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor is right. The people must take to the streets to take this country back!
OCCUPY WALL STREET PROTESTERS: WHOSE STREETS? OUR STREETS! WHOSE STREETS? OUR STREETS! ... WE ARE THE 99%! ... THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING! THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING!
Oh my God, it's working! Eric Cantor, are you seeing this? The people have been awakened by your battle cry!
REP. ERIC CANTOR, R-VA (10/7/2011): I, for one, am increasingly concerned about the growing mobs occupying Wall Street and the other cities across the country.
(wild audience applause as Jon looks confused)
I thought we were having a democracy soul battle. Remember? "Take our country back!" (in Jerry Lewis voice) The bayonets, with the charging, and the powder, and the muskets.
So that's what the Wall Street protest is doing. How is that wrong?
MITT ROMNEY (10/11/2011): I think the idea of dividing our nation at a time of crisis is the wrong way to go.
RICK SANTORUM (10/7/2011): ... talking about millionaires and billionaires, and pitting one group against another ...
SEN. JOHN THUNE, R-SD (10/5/2011): ... an us versus them argument ...

REP. STEVE KING, R-IA (2/19/2010): Now who are we up against? Now I want to define that enemy. They are liberals. They are progressives.
OK, um, I'm pretty sure those people are actually Americans.
NEWT GINGRICH (8/3/2010): ... the entertainment and news media industry ...
REP. MICHELE BACHMANN, R-MN (4/8/2011): ... Planned Parenthood ...
GOV. CHRIS CHRISTIE, R-NJ (7/28/2010): ... state teachers unions ...
NEWT GINGRICH (8/3/2010): ... the tenured professors who can flunk you if you are too openly conservative ...
OK, first of all, everyone you listed I believe are Americans. And second, where the fuck did you go to school? They can flunk you for being conservative? Oh! I know where you went. Fictional U. Go Fighting Figments of Your Paranoid Imagination! (in Newt Gingrich voice) "And sorority girls who won't have sex with you because you're a Republican. Yeah, that's it. Lesbians!"
So is that it? Are there any other groups that it's actually OK to pit Americans against?
GOV. RICK PERRY, R-TX (11/8/2010): ... labor unions and the personal injury trial bar ...
REP. DEVIN NUNES, R-CA (1/5/2011): ... the SEIU ...

FORMER SEN. NORM COLEMAN, R-MN (1/2/2011): ... global warming advocates ...
REP. LOUIE GOHMERT, R-TX (10/4/2011): ... gay folks that are living together ...
(in Louie Gohmert voice) "I don't mind gay folks living alone. Some type of alcove studio, put up one of them Japanese dividers. You got two rooms. You got a sitting room, you got your fucking room."

Oh, Mitt Romney. Oh. All right. (wild audience applause)
But here's your problem. Let me see if I can do the math here. Here's your problem. If you start adding up unions, and progressives, and liberals, and people too poor to pay income tax, and people who want to tax millionaires....

You know who you are, Eric Cantor? You're like the one kid on the playgrounds, always just throwing the dozens all day about someone's mom. "Your mom's so dumb, she thinks food stamps are what you use to mail food! Your mom's so ugly, Richard Dawkins used her as proof of the non-existence of God!" What? He goes to a... I'm assuming he goes to a private school.
And then when someone else on the playground finally comes back with, "Oh yeah? Well, your mom's so fat...." Before they're even finished, Cantor's like, "Whoa, uncool! I am very concerned about all this mother talk dividing our playground. And give me your lunch money, you need to have some skin in the game."
We'll be right back.
