I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that one of my favorite feel good movies is "Pretty Woman" with Richard Gere and Julie Roberts. The movie often comes to mind when Mitt talks about his business acumen.
For those few who haven't seen it, Richard Gere plays the executive of a company that buys businesses for the purpose of reselling their profitable parts at a gain. (Not unlike a car thief who strips a stolen car for its parts - as Julie Roberts points out.) This inevitably results in job losses since there is no longer a "going concern" to employ them. He has been doing this for some time and would undoubtedly be part of todays 1%.
Richard meets Julia, a lady of the night, and gets her dressed up to join him for a dinner with the owner of the business and his grandson. He ends up hiring her for a week of her time. While Julia may not have the education she would like to have or the kind of experiences that women Richard knows are accustomed to, she is very smart in a down to earth-tell it like it is-way. It appears that she is the first woman Richard has encountered who challenges what he does. He likes the owner of the business he is interested in and eventually has an ephipany and ends up working out a deal to save the business instead of buying it. Richard and Julia live happily ever after - I hope.
Mitt comes to mind when I see that ugly photo from the Bain Capital group with he and his co-workers throwing around money. Per the Bain Capital Wikipedia entry: "...Bain
Capital turns a profit on floundering corporations by buying at low cost, stripping away any projects that aren't profiting or that lack potential and laying off any excess workers..."
This is something to brag about when this country is losing jobs in 48 of the 50 states? Think of the stolen car.
If Richard got a conscience because of a prostitute, what will it take for Mitt to see the light?
