I am a liberal stuck in a small midwestern town. A few months ago I stumbled upon this website and now I visit it daily, relieved to find that there are other people like me out there in this world. Reading the diaries makes me think, gives me hope, and generally results in me feeling a little less alone.

I've read other diaries requesting your assistance, so I hope you'll forgive me if this is not the correct forum.

Here's where I need your help: I don't understand the rules, the abbreviations and the terms used here!!! It appears there are subjects that are 'bannable.' Diarists are 'HRed' which is, apparently, really bad. There are 'tip jars' and numerous other things that I can't figure out. I went to the Help section but couldn't find any answers. Would any of you be kind enough to point me in the right direction? And, if there is a more appropriate place to ask questions such as these in the future, could you tell me where that is?

There must be other new members out there who would also benefit from your guidance. Such help would enable us to participate more fully here.

Thank you all so much. Please don't HR me (whatever that is)!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
