I've been married to my lovely Polish-American husband for twenty years, and have always had at least a bit of interest in Polish foods and traditions. Perhaps less of an interest in sauerkraut than other things, but I've grown to like some of the ways they use it. Of course, his mom was always a terrible cook - no palate, and no interest - so I also looked askance at any suggestion of something "mom used to make".
So, this year, I decided to find a few Polish recipes for Christmas foods. I was already planning to make food gifts, so cookies seemed appropriate. After a few internet searches, I settled on Rogaliki. They are gorgeous crunchy cookies, not too sweet, and addictively delicious.
I looked at many other recipes, too, but I know my energy limitations. The other thing I made from the Polish recipes was what Rich calls "Polish cough syrup" - Krupnik. It's a very spiced, sugary, honeyed vodka, best served warm. My sister says it helped her tolerate her in-laws for Christmas.
For other food gifts, I made pumpkin bread from the 1975 edition of The Joy of Cooking, infused vodkas (bacon, and jalapeno), and have plans for many more infused liquors. Limoncello is on the list, possibly Kahlua, and I have specific requests for some fruit vodkas.
So we're starting new traditions here. Are you starting new ones, or following old ones?

from smileycreek:
bleeding heart shares the best political theater tactic of all by turning conservative gun-toting craziness on its head as she goes "shopping" for a handgun:
I tell the shop owners that these untrained conservative crazies are scaring the baloney out of me and I'm feeling forced to look for protection against them because if any of them so much as reach for their pockets, I'm going to take action. And I ask, "if you were a liberal these days, a small woman like me, if I were your wife, even a peaceful person who wouldn't harm a fly, would you feel safe?" They know the answer.
