Virginia’s attorney general on Sunday backed off of a proposal to loosen the state’s ballot access rules to allow more Republican presidential candidates to qualify. Ken Cuccinelli, a Republican, on Saturday had proposed that the legislature pass a new, retroactive, law to allow anyone who qualifies for federal matching funds to be listed on the state’s March 6 primary ballot. That would have allowed Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry to be on the ballot even though they failed to qualify under the state’s existing, rigorous, system. But Mr. Cuccinelli said in a statement a day later that he had concluded there was no way to make a new system fair to candidates like Mitt Romney and Ron Paul, both of whom managed to qualify for the ballot under the existing rules.

Here's another reason for holdouts to join the social media site Facebook: It's a great place to find a kidney. Between the kid photos and reminiscences about high school, more and more pleas for help from people with failing kidneys are popping up. Facebook and other social media sites are quickly becoming a go-to place to find a generous person with a kidney to spare, according to the people asking for help and some national organizations that facilitate matches.

A man who was suspected in the killing of a Mount Rainier National Park Ranger Margaret Anderson on Sunday morning was found deceased on Monday. A law enforcement officer with knowledge of the situation said Benjamin Colton Barnes was found in a ditch. About 200 personnel from several law enforcement agencies were involved in the search for Barnes, said Ranger Kevin Bacher at a media briefing. [...] Ranger Anderson was shot shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday near Longmire Ranger Station. Bacher said the alleged shooter "blew through" a roadblock between Longmire and Paradise. The roadblock was set up to check cars entering the park for proper tires and tire chains. When the driver did not stop, the rangers at the checkpoint radioed for assistance. Anderson established a roadblock to stop the car about a mile below Paradise. When the driver encountered Anderson's roadblock, he exited his car and began firing on Anderson and another ranger, Dan Camiccia.
