Cut Social Security benefits right away!
That's right, Hunter's diary is no joke. Digby links to a similar story:
Risking the wrath of older voters, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is calling for immediate cuts to Social Security benefits and says the country can't wait to phase in reductions as most of his rivals have advocated.
So now we know that we're not dreaming.
There is no greater political moron than Rick Santorum. Despite their being more homophoic, more misogynistic, more racist senators serving in Congress now and in epochs prior, Santorum is the only one that has had his reputation permanently destroyed by A SINGLE MAN over Google. Only Google bombing George Bush was a bigger burn and that didn't have the staying power that Santorum's name problem will. Well that could all be forgiven as beyond his control for going full-funtard to get the votes of religious fanatics.
But this?
Let me explain: Republican voters still love Medicare and Social Security even if they think Democratic party members are trying to loot those programs - I am also obviously excluding the affluent douchebag Republican voter who is too rich to need Government programs. These voters think that these crisis' exist because of the Democratic party and because of 'librewls'.
Also keep in mind that plenty of 'independents' (more appropriately uncommitted-Republican) feel the exact same way. What these voters do not want, is for these programs to start failing anymore, and a benefit reduction in a bad economy is pretty much the definition of a failing program.
By recommending this course of action, Santorum has completely misread his own voters and has done more to blow up his candidacy than Cheney did to blow up the world.
If Romney is still anathema to the party a few months from now it will mean that Republicans found a way to forgive him, and Santorum has by then, probably found a way to spin himself out of trouble. If the DNC, and the leadership in general REALLY DO go after Republicans over their vote on the Ryan plan, however, then there is NO WAY that Santorum can survive what he has said here today because both issues complement each other like doobies and doritos.
Unless a miracle happens, Santorum will go down in history as the only politician to singlehandedly redefine the currently cliche phrase, Epic Fail.
