Hilarious back-stabbing going on among the radical right today. The group "Evangelicals for Perry" dropped Perry and endorsed that paragon of Christian values, Newt Gingrich.
Trying desperately to put a good face on their Judas moment, the organization writes:
There remains a small chance that Gov. Perry will come back in South Carolina and enjoy a resurgence of his campaign heading into Florida and beyond but it is highly unlikely. Rather than waiting for the results of South Carolina before pursuing consolidation, we have chosen to make whatever small contribution we can before the votes are cast. Therefore, we are joining Evangelicals With Newt in endorsing Speaker Gingrich for President.
I mean, hard right Christians going for Newt, the serial adulterer? Isn't this all about faith and Jesus and the Bible and being born again and...
Seems like some of the faithful are none to happy judging by the comments on the "Evangelicals for Perry" webpage:

You are a disgusting example of a supporter for publicizing this before Perry's bid in S.C.
How dare you throw a man under the bus with such contradictory tripe just before his chance to make a stand? And for GINGRICH?!?!?!? A self-declared progressive in contrast most of his life to everything Perry stands for? Support who you want, but to give this to perry foes to use as a weapon shows how shallow of a supporter you were, how shallow your character is and how pathetic of a political future you have

Newt was for TARP, bad mouthed Paul Ryan's plan, sat on couch with Nancy Pelosi, is for amnesty, and on and on. That's conservatism?
But I liked this one best of all...

It calls for one to question the character of some Evangelical Leaders, and I stress some Evangelical Leaders, who value their religion as the core of who they are, what they identify with, end up supporting Non-Evangelicals. You have to ask, just how much do Some Evangelical Leaders really believe in their core values?
Rick Perry is the only prominent Evangelical Christian left in the field otherwise made up of two Catholics, a Mormon and Rep. Ron Paul, who rarely talks about his religious beliefs.
And of course, over at Redstate, which has been the last bastion of Perry support, the troops are still throwing the proverbial Hail Mary:
Forget the Nay-sayers: Perry IS popular in S.C.
PLEASE do not let anyone tell you that South Carolina’s voters have written Gov. Perry off.
...
My favorite conversation was with a sweet little lady in her golden years. After I told her who I was, she said she had heard about Gov. Perry but “didn’t know anything about him”. I told her that he is the governor of Texas and all about his record. The first question she asked me was, “Well, is he a Christian?” “Yes, ma’am” I said. Then she wanted to know if he had been married more than once. “No, ma’am” I said, and I proceeded to tell her how he met his wife, Anita at a piano recital.
And this afternoon on twitter, my dog, Rex, asked a simple question of rightwing heavyweight, Rod Martin, who had announced the back-stab switch at #teaparty:
@RexPoliticalDog Rex, Political Dog
@RodDMartin i see y evanjelikulz wood go for @newtgingrich oafur @GovernorPerry wut wit newtz long histree uv maritul fudelitee. #teaparty
To which Martin replied:
@RodDMartin Rod D. Martin
Yes @RexPoliticalDog, Christianity is abt the redemption of sinners. You'd know that if you read the Bible instead of lampooning it. #Newt
Rex responded:
@RexPoliticalDog Rex, Political Dog
@RodDMartin i do da bes i kan, but i em a dawg. wut a shaym dat a sinnur getz pikt oafur a trew howlee man lyk @GovernorPerry. #teaparty
All in all, great fun! The hypocrisy of the religious right never ceases to amaze.
We can now hope that at some point, Newt will be forced to concede that, "None of my adulterous affairs have resulted in abortions!"
I think it's too late to turn the tide against Romney, but I'm glad to see the phony, two-faced religious zealots giving it the old college try.
