Crossposted at On the road to equality - Notes and news from Equality New Mexico
We here at Equality New Mexico have been up in Santa Fe waiting for the shoe to drop. Today was the day.
This afternoon, Rep. David Chavez of Los Lunas introduced a DOMA amendment on the floor of the New Mexico House of Representatives. The bill, House Joint Resolution 22, would ban marriages in New Mexico and would prevent New Mexico from recognizing lawful same-sex marriages and unions conducted in other states and countries.
We need to hit the ground running to fight back this discriminatory piece of legislation. This is just the kind of wedge issue politics that takes attention off of the real issues that New Mexicans care about: education, jobs, and the economy. We are on the front lines, but we can't do this without your help! Will you make a donation now and energize our work?!
Sign our petition to Rep. Chavez, and ask him to withdraw this bill.
