I promise to ask you next week which dead authors you would invite because I know there are a lot of favorites you would love to talk to who are no longer with us.
Imagine that your guests have accepted and are about to walk in the door. You have prepared a wonderful meal and have a few questions you want to ask. You also know that the three authors will be chatting with each other and many good things may be mentioned so your heart is beating fast in anticipation.
1. Which three authors would you choose?
2. Did you choose them because they would delight each other or cause sparks?
3. Did you choose them because you loved reading their books?
Which of their books are your favorites?
4. What one question would you ask each author? Would it be the same question for all or would you choose a different question for each?
Yes, it is hard to choose only three. If you need to mention more than three, that is fine. I understand.
Perhaps you would have more than one party and invite three authors from a single genre to each party. It is fine to share that because I like so many different kinds of books that would suit my fancy, too.
1. Which three authors would you choose?
My three authors will be Guy Gavriel Kay, C J Cherryh, and Connie Willis. (I know, I know, how could I leave out so many wonderful authors…it was impossible to choose.) All three of these authors write fantasy that I have enjoyed.
2. Did you choose them because they would delight each other or cause sparks?
I imagine they may know each other so probably no sparks.
3. Did you choose them because you loved reading their books?
Yes, I did love their books and their worlds.
Which of their books are your favorites?

4. What one question would you ask each author? Would it be the same question for all or would you choose a different question for each?
I would ask both Kay and Willis about the massive amount of research they did for their most recent books, Under Heaven for Kay, and Black Out and All Clear for Willis.
Kay wrote about China’s 8th century Tang Dynasty, and Willis about England in WW II and I felt I was there for all three books. I learned so much about the times.
I would ask Ms. Cherryh what it was like to be one of the early women fantasy writers.
Then, I would sit back and listen to my guests talk shop.
How about you?
