Remember the Pink Hope 22 Susan G. Komen handgun offered on
Discount Gun Sales website?
Well, it's gone from the site now.
And you may have missed the late-breaking update from Komen as relayed to the Huffington Post:
Andrea Rader, the director of communications for Komen, told HuffPost Friday afternoon that the two groups are not actually affiliated at all.
"We do not have partnerships with any firearms manufacturer."
They were shocked—shocked—such a product existed!
"This fundraising scheme is not sanctioned by us; we had no knowledge of it. We have not received a single penny from this gun seller. It is a rogue scheme," said Jim Clune, communications manager for the Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Well, that's a relief, some might consider it unseemly for a charity based on hope and life to slap their crappy Pink™ logo on a symbol of death and violence. (Yes, of course some people look at a gun and see freedom and liberty. It's self-evident that isn't a universal perception.)
Glad you cleared that up.
Smith And Wesson
Wait, what's this? The
Village Voice's Victoria Bekiempis has caught Komen's PR department spinning yet another lie?
Check it out: in May 2009, Smith & Wesson very publicly announced its first quarterly donation to Komen's Massachusetts' branch. The company was able to fundraise by designing this "M&P9 JG in collaboration with Professional Shooter Julie Goloski Golob with the intent that a portion of the proceeds would benefit breast cancer awareness."
"The full-size pistol is engraved with the 'Awareness Ribbon' on the slide and is packaged with two pink grip inserts (small and medium) along with the three standard black grip inserts."
And there's this:
GunBroker.com hosted an auction of a pink rifle to raise money for breast cancer awareness. This "AR-15 style DPMS Panther Lite 16 Special Edition Pink" went on the bidding block in November 2010.
But wait, there's more!
And let's not forget this recent beaut: A Susan G. Komen Shoot for the Cure event in Illinois! (Seriously, you couldn't make this shit up.)
Oh Komen.
You love your guns, just admit it. You don't have to lie about it, you still have your 2nd amendment rights. Come out of the closet with your arms-dealing fundraising schemes.
