There has been a lot of forward thinking occurring in the Catholic Church:
In 1917 the Church abolished the use of torture.
In 1966 the Church stopped publishing the "Index of Forbidden Books".
In 1992 three hundred and fifty years after condemning Galileo the Church didn't recognize science but did decide that Galileo was right.
And just 2 years ago Pope Benedict IV expressed his sorrow for the abuse of tens of thousands children by Catholic priests in Ireland.
My letter is below the fold.
Your Holiness,
The behavior of the Catholic Church over the recent healthcare rules regarding contraception has caused some concern that you are backsliding. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has grave moral concerns that this is an assault on the sanctity of procreation and your bishop in Soux City, IA, wants people to violently oppose the contraception rule (I certainly hope this isn't calling for a resurrection of torture).
I understand you really believe that God wants us to procreate and that contraception is an intervention in God's plan. But there should be an exception that, if not you then surely God, will understand.
I respecfully ask that you demand the use of condoms by all of the pedophiles currently harbored by you as well as those actively presiding over parishes whenever they are sexually abusing the children of the flock. I understand how difficult this would be for an institution of your moral stature, but to condone the potential of sexually transmitted diseases or unwanted priestly pregnancy while hiding the violent assault on innocence by your priest rapists seems a little much.
Wouldn't this exception be the moral thing to do?
Sincerely,
Simply A Concerned Citizen
