I spent most of this weekend at a gaming convention and so didn't have time to write the concluding part of our look at A Princess of Mars. So in lieu of that, I decided to whip up a quick poll on the subject of Planetary Romances.
According to Wikipedia, which would not lie to me,
Planetary romance is a type of science fiction or science fantasy story in which the bulk of the action consists of adventures on one or more exotic alien planets, characterized by distinctive physical and cultural backgrounds. Some planetary romances take place against the background of a future culture where travel between worlds by spaceship is commonplace; others, particularly the earliest examples of the genre, do not, and invoke flying carpets, astral projection, or other methods of getting between planets. In either case, it is the planetside adventures which are the focus of the story, not the mode of travel.
Planetary romance stories existed before Edgar Rice Burroughs, but he is generally considered to have popularized the genre, and wrote many series in the "sword and planet" setting besides his John Carter novels.
So this week I'm throwing the question out to you, Dear Readers: apart from the John Carter of Mars series, what are your favorite planetary romances? Which books in that genre do you think are notable? Which have you heard of but never read? Which ones do you suspect I just made up?
