At today's news conference Norah O'Donnell tried to get a rise out of the President with the following question,
Today is Super Tuesday. So I wonder if you might weigh in on some of your potential Republican opponents. Mitt Romney has criticized you on Iran and said “Hope is not a foreign policy.” He also said that you are “America’s most reckless President since Carter.” What would you like to say to Mr. Romney?
And here is the President's response
OBAMA: uhh.. Good luck tonight. [LAUGHTER]
And intermixed in the laughter another reporter said, "No, really?" to which the President replied with a smile on his face,
OBAMA: Really! [LAUGHTER]
This was a sucker question. Any attempt to answer it would be a loser for the President. To dignify the Romney ravings with a response would have given them far more credit than they deserve.
Alternatively, he could have made some quip about the cluelessness of Romney and the other dim bulbs in the Republican circus but that would have been beneath the office. And that would have given them something to hit back with.
So instead, he graciously responds with great timing and humor, wishing Romney good luck in the primaries tonight. It is hard to imagine a more perfect response.
And Romney will need a lot of luck tonight and moving forward if he ever thinks he can goad the President with his silly and ahistorical ravings about the Obama Presidency.
