I admit, I didn't watch it last nite. But I did see BruinKid's diary today that had a transcript of Colbert's piece and video links to both. Excellent work by both men, not to mention BruinKid for transcribing that!
Go on, go watch. I'll wait here...
Welcome back. So many great bits, but for me the absolute best bit was Jon Stewart. He'd just explained that it wasn't about tax dollars paying for birth control; rather, it was about private insurance at a private institution covering an important part of comprehensive women's health care:
And I'm just saying to the people who are upset about theirr hard-earned tax money going to things they don't like... welcome to the fucking club. Everyone pays for shit they don't want to all the time. You know what? Reimburse me for the Iraq War and oil subsidies, and diaphragms are on me.
He's right. Regardless of what our opinon is on the quantitiy of taxes we pay, we've
all paid - via state, local and federal taxes - for shit we didn't want to. That we personally didn't agree with, were morally opposed to, etc. IT's happened before, and it damned bloody fecking well will happen again. I know you're all busy refreshing the election results :-), but while you're waiting for the page to reload, do tell: what did YOU have to "pay for" that you'd rather have not?
Me personally, I didn't want to fund the Iraq And Afghanistan wars to a total of $1263 billion.
I'm not a huge fan of farm subsidies, but I understand sometimes they're needed. I did not, however, want to fund $49.4 million to pay them to people ineligible to receive them. Multiple sources suggest the annual per capita cost of health care in the United States is approximately $8000. That $49M translates into coverage for 6175 people. Not a huge amount, but (a) damned important if one of those people is YOU; and (b) something I do want to spend "my tax dollars" on.
I sure as hell didn't want to spend $250 million on "abstinence education." As a trained educator of a comprehensive sexuality program in my Unitarian Universalist denomination, it bloody well DOES conflict with my moral values.
So... what did YOU get stuck paying for?
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything
without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do
not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
