In this awesome diary, kossack Kaili Joy Gray wrote up 80's has-been and X-tian footsoldier Kirk Cameron's latest round of hate-with-a-vacuous-smile, calling homosexuality "unnatural" and "detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization."
This morning, Today - that paragon of unflinching, credible journalism - gave Kirk "I Don't Hate Unnatural, Detrimental, And Civilization-Destroying Homos" Cameron a national stage for his ever-repugnant brand of "loving the sinner".
My replies to Kirk's explanations below the fleur-de-kos.
I was surprised, frankly, that people were surprised by the things that I’ve said.
- Kirk Cameron, Today, 3/20/12
No, Kirk; no one was surprised by what you said. We're all aware of your exclusionary, hateful rhetoric. The reaction to your bile wasn't "surprise". It was anger, outrage, rejection, and condemnation. Get used to it.
Oh, and this "surprise" dodge is pretty cowardly. Have the courage of your convictions and face your critics instead of hiding behind deliberate mischaracterizations.
When you take a subject and reduce it to a four-second sound bite and a checkmark on a ballot, I think that’s inappropriate and insensitive.
- Kirk Cameron, Today, 3/20/12
So true. Just like when you take a massive outpouring of intense disagreement, outrage, anger, and condemnation and dismiss it as "surprise". That's got to be pretty insensitive, right?
Nobody should mistreat anybody. We all have our convictions formed by different things and mine are informed by my faith.
- Kirk Cameron, Today, 3/20/12
Thanks for your redefinition of "mistreat", Kirk. Otherwise, I might have been under the erroneous impression that calling millions of people unnatural and telling them that they're destroying civilization is mistreatment. Good to know it's just a harmless conviction informed by your faith. Whew. It was looking pretty bad for a minute, there.
When people start bullying one another and calling each other names for those different convictions, then I think you get into problems.
- Kirk Cameron, Today, 3/20/12
Excellent point, Kirk! Good thing you didn't call anyone unnatural, detrimental, or destructive! Also, my sympathies for your apparently early onset of Alzheimer's. It must be rough not remembering what you just said.
I love all people. I hate no one.
- Kirk Cameron, Today, 3/20/12
Unless, of course, loving someone means accepting them as who they are. In that case, we'll have to renegotiate.

To quote a more beloved television star of yesteryear (who is ironically less of a cartoon than Mr. Cameron), "that's all I can stands, and I can't stands no more."
