I do not believe most of them to be stupid. And so I make this plea to reasonable Republicans everywhere:
Speak up.
They can't, they would disappear as a party since the opposition in a rush to the middle, have taken their old positions.
The stupidity was tapping into the religious right and defining it as their own base, the problem is now there is no going back. The GOP is the party of extreme right and every conspiracy theory under the sun. They have no place to run, and no will to do so, and indeed where would they go?
The have baked a toxic pastry and they do not seem able to push back against their most extreme elements because it would be political suicide to do so. The MSM continually whine about the ideological divide. The only divide exists within the Democratic Party, since it now contains both moderate Republicans and progressives, the center of our party was once the divide between left and right in the US.
When right wing shock jocks represent your party's middle ground you just know you have a problem. When you end up defending every bigots right to express their views [and by association yours] you really need to take a look in the mirror.
You can wish to reset your Etch A Sketch by giving it a good shake but, your base isn't going anywhere and they want blood. If you speak out you know you are doomed, however your base has also had enough of your false promises, this time they are holding you accountable.
You have made your own bed, the trouble is, you are asking us to sleep in it.
There is no way on earth Romney would have had to go this far just ten years ago, then again, he wouldn't even be in the running.
One could argue, perhaps they are where they intended to be, since the divide between the two parties is the furthest to the right that it has been in living memory.
