Why is it that everytime a fact is cited that doesn't jibe with the Conservative world view they simply disregard it or question the veracity of the source? If you say things like the government spending went up more under Reagan than under Obama which is proved here and here - because that fact clashes with their self-created reality it is just plain ignored.
And it doesn't really matter what the topic or subject is: Cutting Taxes creates Jobs and reduces deficits (um, can you show an actual piece of data proving this?); Abstinence Education reduces teen pregnancy (yep, right up until they stop abstaining, then not so much);
They ignore any and all incovenient truths - be they movies or simple things like tax rates. My favorite way to render speechless a ranting conservative rattling on about "we need to cut taxes to reduce to deficit" is to say "yea we should go back to Reagan-era tax rates, because if it was good enough for Reagan then it should be good enough for us now." Now I'm not endorsing Reagan by any means but look at the US tax rates for top earners and you can see that most conservatives have no desire to go back to treating capital gains as ordinary income (which frankly I support, income is income).
When I was younger (and possibly more foolish) it seemed that at least people on each side of the aisle could agree on a set of facts (yes, the sky is blue and water is wet) - although what those facts meant obviously differed.
When I opposed the Iraq war, even prior to the discovery that most of the evidence for going to war was false, I did so as a Navy Veteran who had studied the history of Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon, and Afghanistan. The facts were obvious to a casual student of history - Iraq was peaceful because of the brutal oppression of the populace by a dictator - once America, and the coalition, removed the source of that oppression all the sectarian strife that had lain fallow below the surface came to fore and was allowed free reign. This pattern had been seen time and time again especially in countries and localities whose political borders had been written by colonial powers with no regard the historical reality on the ground. (See Iraq, Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc).
Regardless of the topic Right-wing Republicans increasingly trot out tropes that are separate from reality. "the Free Market cures everything" - yea except the free market has zero financial interest in providing long-term care for the elderly or good public education for everyone. The Free market is great until something comes along where there isn't a way to make a profit or it needs to be done because it's a quality of life issue.
The best example of attacking incovenient facts is of course the climate change debate. Whether it's attacking the messenger (mention Al Gore and watch the sniggers and dismissals from the Right) or attacking the science or even the scientists. Maybe the Right attacks facts and scientists so readily because they so often create theeir own "facts" to support their opinions - I don't really know. All I know is it has become impossible to have a pragmatic, data driven conversation with anyone from the Republican Right. And how do you solve something if you can't even agree if it is happening. (for a great source of climate change data go to Skeptical Science)
I don't know how to resolve this problem - except to become more strident about asking for data and calling people on the carpet whenever they trot out a tired trope. And we should ask the media to do the same thing. There are problems that need to be solved (budget deficitis, climate change, education funding, etc) and we can't begin to begin solving them until we at least agree on what is actually happening. Facts are just that. They are are not fungible, you can't change them to support your opinions or religion. Let's start making people acknowledge reality, then maybe we can get people to begin improving things.
