Media coverage of gay-related hate crimes suggests that attackers often perceive some level of threat from homosexuals. People in denial about their sexual orientation may lash out because gay targets threaten and bring this internal conflict to the forefront, the authors write.
Truth will out -- and if this particular truth means that anti-gay rhetoric is met with chuckles that the speaker doth protest too much, so much the better. Some bigots will never change their minds; the best that can be done is to shame them into retreat from polite society until they make way for a more civilized generation.
